STOCKTON, Calif. – The San Francisco men's tennis team came away with a 2-1 record on the weekend to earn fifth at the third annual Pacific Mountain Invitational at Stockton's Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center.
Each of the Dons' three matches on the weekend were singles-only, as the potential threat of inclement weather prohibited the play of doubles matches throughout the invitational.
"We rebounded with great back-to-back performances!" noted USF head coach
Pablo Pires de Almeida. "We finished strong with two solid wins, beating New Mexico in the second match and then UTA to take 5th.
Mert Zincirli won all 3 of his matches in straight sets to be the lock for us at No. 2."
First, the Dons tussled with the host Tigers, falling 4-1 to its conference foe. Zincirli, a freshman from Adana, Turkey, nabbed the point, earning the 6-3, 6-3 result over Pacific's Tadiwa Chinamo and USF's lone point in their invitational opener.
In the afternoon match, the Dons rebounded by taking on co-hosts, New Mexico, and flipped the scoring script to earn the 4-1 victory.
Ryan Marker got the scoring going with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Rodolfo Jauregui on Court 3, and
Woravin Kumthonkittikul took a straight-set win over Lobo Lawrence Perrin to extend the advantage. New Mexico edged closer after a win at No. 6, but Zincirli secured at least a tie on the day after downing Ricky Hernandez-Tong, 6-2, 7-6(4). No. 1 player Johan Joenhgen clinched the win after defeating New Mexico's Bart Van Leijsen, 5-7, 7-5, 6-4, to send the Dons into the fifth place match.
On Sunday against UT Arlington, USF found itself down 2-0 after dropping points at the Nos. 3 and 5 courts. Zincirli got the Dons going on Court 2, reeling off his third straight-set victory of the weekend as he took down Mario Muniesa, 6-0, 6-4. Joenhagen followed with the win at No. 1 to tie the match, and
Paul Giraud's 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win over Pablo Colvee on Court 6 secured at least a split.
Oliver Poysti put together a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 victory at No. 4 to clinch the outright win for the Dons as USF earned fifth in the field of eight teams.
With the pair of victorious efforts on the weekend, USF improved its record to 4-8 in the spring as the Dons yet again prepare to face off with Pacific. The Tigers, who finished fourth in the Pacific Mountain Invitational, host the Dons in the first West Coast Conference match for both squads on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Stockton.
