USF Dispatches Santa Clara, 4-3

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The San Francisco men's tennis team extended their winning streak to four, downing Santa Clara 4-3 at Degheri Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Dons now stand at 10-12 on the season with a 5-3 mark in West Coast Conference play. Peaking at the right time, USF has earned victories in six of its last seven opponents. Meanwhile, Santa Clara moves to 14-5 (4-4 WCC) as the Dons overtook the Broncos in the league standings.

"We battled a tough Bronco team and won four singles matches to get the W," exclaimed USF head coach Pablo Pires de Almeida. "Woravin stepped up in the third set to get the clinch!"

After dropping the doubles point to the Broncos, Santa Clara extended their lead with a win on Court 2. Reigning WCC Player of the Week Oliver Poysti was the first Don to register a point, dispatching Jesus Barajas 7-6(4), 6-1 on Court 4. Then, No. 1 player Mert Zincirli took care of Robert Seby, 6-3, 6-2, to even the match.

Next to get on the board was Ryan Marker, who downed Santa Clara's Connor Garnett, 7-5, 6-3, from the No. 3 position in the lineup. After the Broncos pulled out a three-set win on Court 5, the fate of the match hinged on senior Woravin Kumthonkittikul.

The native of Bangkok, Thailand, dropped his first set to Kamran Khan, 3-6, before rebounding with a 6-4 win in the second. With all eyes on the finishing court, Kumthonkittikul powered to a 6-2 score in the final frame to clinch the team victory over the Broncos.

USF closes out the regular season on the road, taking on San Diego on Friday at 10 a.m., before heading to the WCC Championships April 26-28 in Claremont, Calif.
