SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The San Francisco men's tennis team fell at San Diego in its final regular season match at Hogan Tennis Center, but the postseason awaits the Dons in next weekend's West Coast Conference Championships.
Despite the 4-0 score in favor of the Toreros, the match was hotly contested with three singles matches that extended to a full three-set affair. San Diego was able to capitalize on USF's miscues to come away from the victory on the day and advance their record to 13-9 on the year, and 5-3 in league play. The Dons close the regular season slate with a 10-13 mark, but stand at 5-4 in WCC action to earn a spot in the championship field after missing last year's tournament.
"We lost a very competitive match today," said USF head coach
Pablo Pires de Almeida. "Our guys unfortunately were sloppy and San Diego took advantage of it. It was a well-fought match, and hats off to USD for being better today. Now we are ready for conference!"
USF's most competitive courts in action were in the middle of the lineup. At No. 5,
Paul Giraud dropped the first set to Joel Gamerov but rebounded to win the second, 6-3, before falling in the third by a tally of 6-4.
Ryan Marker's match against Guus Koevermans on Court 3 was following a similar pattern, with the Torero winning the first and USF's Marker taking the second set. The third set was a tight 5-4 battle before the match was suspended.
Oliver Poysti, playing from the No. 4 position in the lineup, earned a first-set win over Joshua Page. After dropping the second set 6-2, Poysti and Page were in the midst of a 4-3 frame when San Diego clinched the win.
With matches still forthcoming over the weekend to close out the regular season, the seeding for the WCC Championships is yet to be fully determined but the six-team field has been set. BYU, Pepperdine, Portland, San Diego, USF and Santa Clara have each earned a spot in the brackets and now advance to compete April 27-29 at Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, Calif.
