Dons Crash Waves on Senior Day

SAN FRANCISCO – Riding the wave of Senior Day, the San Francisco men's tennis team upended Pepperdine 4-2 on the courts of the California Tennis Club on Saturday.

"It was a huge senior day for the Dons!" exclaimed USF head coach Pablo Pires de Almeida. "Christian and Mert stepped up to get the first win of the day and Paul and Ollie hung tough to gut theirs out in a breaker. In singles, we had a dominant performance from Ryan to get us our second point Then we had JJ tough out his match and Ollie come up stronger than his opponent in the third set for the clinch."
The No. 2 tandem from Pepperdine opened the day with the win, but the Dons raced back to take the point after victories on Nos. 1 and 3. Senior Christian Brockstedt, alongside partner Mert Zincirli, took care of Jack Van Slyke and Stefan Menichella, 6-4, on doubles Court 1. Oliver Poysti and Paul Giraud gutted out the 7-6 (3) decision over Lautaro Pane and Pedro Iamachkine to earn the doubles point and edge out to the match lead.

Pepperdine's Van Slyke knotted the match with his win on Court 5 before Ryan Marker secured his second singles win of the weekend, taking down Pane, 6-3, 6-2. The Waves again squared the score after taking the win on No. 1. USF's Johan Joenhagen's match on Court 2 went the way of the Dons with a tally of 7-6(5), 6-1, before Poysti earned his second clinch of the day.

In a quarterfinal rematch from January's National Collegiate Tennis Classic, the junior from Danderyd, Sweden, upended Iamachkine, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, to turn the Waves away and send the seniors off with the victory in their last match on their home court.

The loss for the Waves was their first of the season in West Coast Conference action, as Pepperdine now sits at 9-8 on the year, and 4-1 in league play. The Dons improve to 9-12 (4-3 WCC) heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.

Next, USF takes on Santa Clara in the South Bay on Saturday at 2 p.m., before closing the schedule at San Diego on April 21.
