SAN FRANCISCO – Trailing 1-0 at the intermission, the University of San Francisco women's soccer team went on a scoring bonanza in the second half. The Dons scored four times in the final 45 minutes for the decisive 4-1 victory over visiting Pacific on Sunday afternoon at Negoesco Stadium.
USF (9-5-1, 2-1-1 WCC) found themselves trailing at the half when Pacific (2-12-0, 0-5-0 WCC) scored on a penalty kick in the 24
th minute by Kendall Bietsch. The penalty kick was rewarded when the Tigers attack got deep in the Dons penalty box and had their best look on goal.
At the intermission, USF outshot UOP 13-4 including a 6-1 shots on goal advantage but could not send the ball to the back of the net. Coming out of the break, the Dons continued to apply pressure on Pacific's keeper Regan Heslop. The Dons finished the afternoon with 27 shots, 11 on target.
Autumn Smithers finally got the Dons on the board in the 56
th minute when she sent a header past Heslop on the right side of the box off the feed from
Izzie Lueken and
Miciah Madison. The goal by Smithers was her second of the year.
Madison, who recorded her ninth of the assist of the season on the goal by Smithers, scored the game winner when Smithers returned the favor, she took a pass from Smithers on the right side from 15 yards for her third goal of the season.
Ashley Humphrey becomes the second player to record a two-goal outing by the Dons this season. Humphrey scored the first of her two goals in the 68
th minute when she gathered a rebound from the keeper on her own attempt. With five minutes left in the contest she scored again when she took the pass from
Sylvia Sloss and sent a header to the far post.
GAME NOTES
- The Dons earned their ninth win of the season, just the third time they've won at least nine games in the last 10 years.
- With the assist Madison how has nine on the year, moving her into a three-way tie for second all-time in a single season with Shanna Haines who did it in 1987 and 1989. Madison now has 11 assists for her career which is 10th all-time.
- The 27 shots by the Dons on the day is the second most this season, USF recorded 31 shots in the win over New Mexico on Sept. 2.
- Seven players have scored two or more goals this season, with 10 players scoring at least once. Samantha Jehnings still has the team lead with nine goals on the year.

The Dons begin a crucial stretch of the season with a pair of home games next weekend against two teams ahead of them on the standings. Gonzaga comes to Negoesco Stadium on Friday, Oct. 19 for a 7:00 p.m. contest. On Sunday, the Dons wrap up the homestand with a 1:00 p.m. game against Portland.
