VB | Efficiency Lifts Gonzaga Past Dons

SPOKANE, Wash. — Emily Zinger led the San Francisco volleyball team Saturday afternoon with 12 kills while the Dons competed tough in another West Coast Conference match, but host Gonzaga found efficiency on both sides of the ball to emerge victorious, 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-18), at the Martin Centre.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • For the second straight match, the Dons (8-9, 1-5 WCC) nearly evened things up at 1-1 with a very closely contested second set. San Francisco went on a quick 4-1 run late in the set to get themselves to set point at 24-23, thanks in part to back-to-back kills from Victoria Rogers. But Gonzaga (6-11, 3-3 WCC) righted their ship and followed with three straight points on kills from Jenna Kuehn and Kaylie Loewen, and a clinching block from Loewen and Peighton De Von, to win the set, 26-24.

  • USF carried the momentum of a close second set into the third, scoring seven straight points to take an early 7-1 lead. But a 7-1 run later by Gonzaga turned the tables and gave the Bulldogs a 14-12 lead. They went on to score eight of the last 10 points in the set, winning the final frame, 25-18, and clinching the match, but it still required a comeback and holding off the Dons to earn the sweep.

  • Gonzaga hit .483 in the first set to get out ahead, 1-0, in the match. A 5-0 run midway through the set on four kills and a service aces turned a three-point contest into an eight-point advantage at 15-7. The Bulldogs built their lead to as large as 10 at 21-11 before winning the set, 25-17.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • .365: Gonzaga hit .365 Saturday, the highest hitting percentage of any USF opponent this season. Only two other times in 17 total matches have opponents hit over .268. All three occasions have come in the team's last four matches.
  • 12: Zinger's team-high 12 kills marked her first double-digit kills performance in nine matches. She also hit .321 on the afternoon to lead the Dons.
COMING UP
  • San Francisco returns home next week for two home matches against two of the best teams in the country. USF hosts the No. 1 team in the country on Thursday in undefeated BYU. San Diego, receiving votes in the latest national poll, visits War Memorial at Sobrato Center on Saturday.
