SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco volleyball team's seniors shined one last time as Dons Tuesday in War Memorial at the Sobrato Center, as
Marjolijn Oskam set a career high with 11 blocks and
Lena Bondar led USF with a season-high 19 kills, as Pacific edged out a 3-2 (25-19, 22-25, 25-23, 20-25, 15-9) West Coast Conference victory in both teams' season finales.
Tuesday's match was moved to San Francisco instead of being played in Stockton, Calif., as originally scheduled because of the poor air quality on the Central Valley due to the Camp Fire burning in Northern California's Butte County.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Dons' defense was stout Tuesday. Oskam and her teammates combined for 21.5 total team blocks, the most by USF (9-20, 2-16 WCC) in a single match in at least the last seven seasons. Oskam's 11 blocks were a career high, and accented what has been a stellar career for the redshirt senior middle blocker. She finished her three-year career at San Francisco with 299 total blocks, and she finishes her collegiate career (Xavier University, University of San Francisco, 2014-18) with 300 total career blocks.
Â
- Unfortunately for San Francisco, the block disappeared in the fifth and deciding set. USF held Pacific (13-16, 8-10 WCC) to less than .065 hitting in both of the sets that it won. That included the fourth set, in which USF held the Tigers to just .049 hitting with a match-high eight blocks in that set alone. But in the fifth, the Dons tallied no blocks, while Pacific hit a match-best .400 with just one error, pulling away for the 15-9 match-clinching victory.
Â
- Seven of Bondar's team-high 19 kills came in the sets that USF won, Nos. 2 and 4. She also had four of her five blocks on the night across those two sets. Bondar and Oskam were both the sparks for San Francisco's offense Tuesday. Bondar hit .368 with her high kills total and Oskam turned in eight kills from the middle, hitting .375 along the way.
Â
- Pacific played the same lineup the entire match and the numbers piled up. Riley Ramsey led all players with a career-high 29 kills. She went for a double-double with 15 digs and also added three service aces and a block. Three other Tigers had at least 10 kills each and two others also had double-doubles. Setter Hanne De Scrijver logged 65 assists and 13 digs along with an ace and a block. Riley Patterson had 12 kills and a team-high 23 digs to go with two assists, two blocks and an ace.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
- 2: Two Dons posted double-doubles in the season finale. Ally Wada tallied 18 assists and collected 11 digs. Kathya Garcia turned in her team-leading 11th double-double of the year with 12 kills and 11 digs.
- 9: San Francisco finished 2018 with nine wins – two more than the previous two seasons combined. Head Coach Frank Lavrisha and the Dons tripled their wins total from his first season in 2017 (3).
- 19: Bondar's 19 kills Tuesday were the most this season by a player not named Kathya Garcia, who had two 22-kills performances in 2018. Her .368 hitting percentage was also fourth-best behind her own team season-high of .444 on Senior Day, Nov. 3 versus Portland.
- 1,463: In just two seasons, Erin Anthony has left herself just two assists outside of the Dons' all-time career assists top-10 list with 1,463. She had 27 Tuesday, tied for her fifth-most this season and her 17th match in 2018 with at least 20.
