THE WEEKEND DIG

San Francisco (8-17, 1-13 WCC) is coming off a very competitive week last week in its final home matches of the season. The Dons won sets in both of its matches last week, including pushing Portland to five sets on Saturday. USF has won sets in five of its last six matches. The Dons were swept by both San Diego (Oct. 13) and No. 1 BYU (Oct. 11) earlier in the season, but they pushed both teams. The Dons led in all three sets versus the top-ranked Cougars and were within five points or less in each of the last two sets.

San Diego (13-10, 10-3 WCC) is receiving votes (4) in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association national poll. The Toreros played just one match last week against No. 1 BYU, falling on the road at the Cougars to snap a six-match winning streak that included five straight sweeps. Roxie Wiblin leads the USD offense with 225 kills (2.71 per set), 40 more than the next player. Anna Newsome has powered the offense with 531 assists and 13 service aces – third-most on the team.

The No. 1 ranked team in the country continues to be undefeated BYU (23-0, 13-0 WCC), a spot it has held for nine straight weeks now. The Cougars downed San Diego for the second time this season in their lone match last week. The only team to win a set against BYU in WCC play this season has been San Diego, taking one frame in both meetings. BYU has swept its opponent in 13 of its last 15 matches. BYU enters the week as the best hitting team in the country at a .328 clip. It also holds opponents to the fourth lowest hitting percentage in the nation at .140. BYU is one of the best blocking teams in the country, too, at No. 7 with 2.88 per set. Roni Jones-Perry leads the WCC in kills per set (4.53), points per set (5.30) and aces per set (0.44). She's also third in total kills (331) and sixth in hitting percentage (.353).
