Dons Add Three for 2019

SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco women's soccer team already boasts an impressive core returning for the 2019 campaign.  With that in mind, head coach Jim Millinder wasn't looking for a big haul with the incoming class, but specific athletes that will help push the Dons over the top as they continue to climb in the conference standings.

Millinder and the USF coaching staff are pleased to announce the addition of Kaylin Lunsford (El Segundo HS/El Segundo, Calif.), Megan Nail (South Kitsap HS/Port Orchard, Wash.) and Keely Roy (Cardinal Newman HS/Sebastopol, Calif.) who signed National Letters of Intent.

"The class overall is very small and selective," said Millinder. "We had a very large class last year and the 2019 class was about quality and not numbers.  I was looking to fulfill specific needs for the Dons in 2019 and I think all three of these players have the opportunity to make an impact on our team.  There's nothing better than competition."

Lunsford a 5-6 forward from El Segundo High School was named the top goal scorer and best attacking player for the Eagles.  For the last two seasons, Lunsford has played on the LA Galaxy USSDA.  As a member of the U18/19 she has played in 12 games making 10 starts and has scored six goals.  In three seasons playing for the LA Galaxy she has scored 17 goals in 47 matches.

Off the pitch, Lunsford excels in the classroom being named to the Principles Honor Roll.  Her hobbies and interests include helping animals.  She says the best part about being a student-athlete is becoming part of a team who is your family.  She chose USF because of the beautiful campus and the amazing people.

"Kaylin is a goal scorer," said Millinder. "She has scored goals at every level she's ever competed at and if she continues to train hard the DI level will be no different.  She has tremendous speed and a great understanding of positioning herself in and around the penalty box to create chances for herself.  She's very technical with a very good understanding of the game.  She has all the potential to be an outstanding goal scorer at the DI level.  I'm excited to get her in."

Nail is a 5-10 keeper who prepped at South Kitsap High School.  In her one season playing for the Wolves she recorded 93 saves, averaging 6.2 saves per contest and earned team MVP honors and Second Team South Puget Sound All-League honors.  On the club circuit she plays for Washington Premier FC ECNL 00.

Away from soccer she enjoys the outdoors, chose USF because of the coaching staff and the city. Planning on majoring in management.

"Megan has outstanding athleticism and a tremendous desire to succeed at the next level.  Athletically she reminds me a lot of Madalyn Schiffel – the greatest goalkeeper in USF history.  I think her disposition and training habits are outstanding. Megan at the end, has the ability to be an outstanding Division I goalkeeper," said Millinder.

Roy is a 5-5 midfielder/forward who will make the short trip from across the Golden Gate to get to the Hilltop.  The native of Sebastopol was a four-time letter winner for the Cardinal Newman High School.  She has earned multiple all-league honors while playing for the Cardinals and was named the Player of the game in the CIF Championship against Bradshaw Christian in 2018.  Entering her senior campaign, she has amassed 112 points, scoring 44 goals with 24 assists.

Roy is another exceptional student as well.  She was her eighth grade classes' valedictorian and has been on the Principal's list with a 4.0 or above GPA all four years in high school.  Her hobbies include baking, working out, going to the breach and adventuring.  She chose USF because she likes the style of soccer and the way the coach Millinder coaches.  She says loves that there's always something going on in San Francisco.

"Outstanding midfielder player, I believe one of the top midfield players in the state.  She's got tremendous potential at the next level. She is a goal scorer out of the midfield and has a very good understanding of how the game needs to be played.  I think she will fit in to our program immediately and she has the potential to be an outstanding Division I soccer player.  I'm excited to get her in and join our program."
