BSB | Dons Beaten by Potent UTSA Offense

THE RUNDOWN
SAN ANTONIO, Texas –
The University of San Francisco returned to the field on Saturday for a double-header against the University of Texas San Antonio. The Dons battled hard, but the Roadrunners' offense was too much for the Dons.

In the first game of the afternoon, newcomer Landen Bourassa took to the mound for the Dons. The Roadrunners jumped out to an early lead off a two-run home run from Bryan Arias. It was a lead that UTSA would not relinquish.

The Dons never gave in, getting runners in scoring position from the fifth inning on to put the pressure on the UTSA pitching staff. In the bottom of the ninth, the Dons got on the board when Rob Emery hit into a double that allowed Brady Bate to score from third base.

In the second game the Dons got off to a fast start, scoring four runs in first inning. The Roadrunners were able to match the Dons' inning, adding four of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Scott Parker, coming on in relief for Haydn King, put together two shutout innings before the potent UTSA offense put together a string of three innings of scoring three runs.

With the duo of Joey Steele and Riley Ornido putting together a pair of scoreless innings, the Dons were able to get a run back in the eighth on a Riley Helland single that drove in Mike Perri. In the end the Roadrunners bats were too much for the Dons, winning 13-5.

COACHES QUOTES
Head coach Nino Giarratano

On the positives to take from today's double header:
"What we can take is that we got a couple of guys their first collegiate base hits with Dom Grissom and Matt Campos. On the pitching end we got two good innings pitched from Joey Steele and Riley Ornido. Scotty (Parker) was great for the first two innings, but we left him in too long today."

On the opportunity to win up 4-0 in second game
"We had a golden opportunity in the second game today going up 4-0 in the first inning of the second game. To not win today we had to do a bunch of things wrong and, unfortunately, that's what happened today. We got UTSA in a lot of two-out situations, but we gave up a lot hits in those moments. All-around it wasn't a good performance today."

On the pitching performances from Steele and Ornido
"I'm very pleased with those two today. They had a plan, and they went out and executed their plans.

On Alex Pham's collegiate debut
"He was sharp and commanded his breaking ball really well today. He moved is fastball around and really pitched well for his first game. Overall I'm pleased with the way he went out and pitched his game today."

On UTSA
"You got to tip your hat to UTSA for the way they went out and swung the bat aggressively today. They hit the ball well and played a good all-around game."
