BSB | USF Falls in Final Game of Weekend Home Opener

THE RUNDOWN
SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco baseball team ended their home opening weekend against Bay Area foe, San Jose State, losing 6-1.

Coming into the game riding a three-game win streak, having beaten the Spartans in the first game of a double header on Saturday. San Jose State jumped on the Dons in the second inning when Joey Steele gave up a lead-off triple to Chris Williams. David Campbell singled to right field to drive in Williams, but Campbell was thrown out trying to advance.

The Dons had a chance to even the score in the third, with Jonathan Allen singling to lead-off the inning. Allen stole second, and advanced to third on a Tyler Villaroman ground ball. USF were unable to get Allen across the plate, with the next two batters producing outs.

In the fifth inning, the Spartans increased their lead scoring three in the top half of the frame. After getting the first batter out Benji Post hit the Spartans' Chris Duty, who then stole second to advance into scoring position. The next batter singled to centerfield, which allowed Duty to move to third and score on sac fly in the following at-bat. Scott Parker replaced Post, but the lefty allowed back-to-back hits that scored two before getting the final out of the inning.

USF didn't go down without a fight, getting one back in the sixth inning through an Aaron Ping sac fly that scored Riley Helland. The Dons got runners into scoring position in three of the four final innings of the game, but were unable to get to the Spartans pitching today.

The Spartans added another two runs in the ninth inning to increase their lead to 6-1. With this loss the Dons move to 4-3 on the season.

GAME STATS
  • Ping's sacrifice fly in the sixth inning moves his season RBI total to four following a three-game series where he had a RBI in each game.
  • Allen continued his rampant start to his season, adding another 3 hits today to put him at 15 for the season. That total has him as the team leader in that category.
  • Brady Bate had a notable day at the plate, going two-for-four, including the double that moved Helland to third before Ping's sac fly.
