LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The West Coast Conference announced its all-conference teams today and junior
Frankie Ferrari earned first team honors, while freshman
Souley Boum was named to the all-freshman team.
Saint Mary's Jock Landale was named the Player of the Year, Pacific's Namdi Okonkwo earned Defensive Player of the Year honors, while Gonzaga's Mark Few and Zach Norvell took home Coach of the Year and Newcomer of the Year.
Ferrari leads the Dons and ranks 11
th in the conference in scoring average with 13.8 points per contest in WCC play. The junior has taken the reigns of the offense and transformed the Dons. This season he has scored 10 or more points 20 times, including 12 times in the last 13 games. He earned West Coast Conference Player of the Week following his performance against No. 15 Saint Mary's and LMU. That week he led the Dons, averaging 18.5 points per game, 20 alone in the win over the Gaels. But his scoring alone doesn't tell the whole story. Ferrari is fourth in the WCC in assists per game, averaging 4.9 and second in the conference in assist/turnover ratio at 2.8. Ferrari has tallied five or more assists 15 times, including a career-high 13 assists in the Dons road win over Pacific on Feb. 22.
Boum burst on to the scene for the Dons and has had a huge impact ever since. He began his career on the Hilltop posting back-to-back 20-point games against Long Beach State and Saint Francis (PA). The native of Oakland, Calif., owns the Dons single season record by a freshman with made free throws, breaking a 44-year-old record set by Winford Boynes. Boum's 324 points is eight all-time by a freshman in a single season on the Hilltop, five shy of tying teammate
Charles Minlend. Boum had a habit of coming up big in big games for the Dons. He scored 22 against Gonzaga on Jan. 18 and 21 at BYU on Feb. 8.
USF (17-14, 9-9 WCC) will play in the West Coast Conference Basketball Championships on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., when the fourth seeded Dons take on the fifth seed Pacific Tigers. Saturday's contest will be televised on NBC Sports California with Barry Tompkins and Dan Belluomini calling the action live from courtside.
