BSB | Dons Fall in Game One of WCC Tournament to Pepperdine, 8-2

The Rundown
STOCKTON, Calif. - The University of San Francisco Dons baseball's (28-29, 0-1 WCC Tournament) fell in their first game of the WCC Tournament against the No. 1 seeded Pepperdine Waves (30-22, 1-0 WCC Tournament) 8-2.
 
After retiring the first four batters of the game, Thomas Ponticelli would come up against Pepperdine's Duncan McKinnon, who would hit a solo home run over the wall in right field to make it 1-0 in the second inning. Ponticelli would strike out the final two outs to keep the Waves lead at one run.
 
With two-outs in the third inning, Ponticelli would walk Chase Lambert, extending the inning. The next batter up for Pepperdine, Brandt Belk, would hit a double down the left field line. The runner would score from first on a close play at the plate to bump the Pepperdine lead to 2-0. The Waves would add another three runs on a two-run home run and a solo home run to make it 5-0 after three.
 
The Dons would threaten in the top half of the fifth, with Riley Helland and Ross Puskarich leading off the inning with a single and a double. USF would be unable to bring them around to score and Pepperdine would take advantage in the home half of the inning, scoring another two runs. With one-out, Pepperdine would get a double and a single to bring in the first run of the inning. Grant Young would come in for Ponticelli with runners on first and third. The sophomore would get a fly out to center field, which would bring the seventh run of the game for the Waves to make it 7-0 after five innings.
 
USF would get runners on second and third with no-outs for the second straight inning through back-to-back singles from Tyler Villaroman and Jonathan Allen. Michael Perri would come up with one-out and hit a sharp ground ball through the left side of the infield, bringing in Villaroman and Allen in to cut the Waves lead to 7-2.
 
The Waves would add a run in the sixth inning through a pass ball with two-outs, bringing in the runner form third to make it 8-2, which would be the final score.
 
USF returns to Banner Island Ballpark tomorrow at 12 p.m. to take on the loser of game two between No. 2 seed Gonzaga and No. 3 seed LMU in an elimination game.

GAME STATS
  • Riley Helland led the Dons in hits this afternoon with three, going three-for-four on the afternoon.
  • With his three hits, Helland is now second on the team in that category with 72.
