Though it is the offseason, the University of San Francisco women's basketball players in Europe are putting together a strong summer of competition. The Dons had a total of five athletes competing for their respective countries in the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) European Championships this month.

Four incoming players, Julia Nielacna of Poland, Amelie Lander of Denmark, and the twins Marta and Marija Galic from Croatia, have been competing at the u20 level of the FIBA Women's European Championships.

Nielacna was the standout of the Dons playing in the tournament, leading Poland in both points (114), rebounds (45), and efficiency per game (13.4), playing in all seven of the games for her country. Nielacna saved her best for the final three games of the tournament, scoring 24 against Croatia before putting up her tournament high 27 points against Belgium. She went on to add another 18 in the final game against Latvia. She grabbed a total of 19 rebounds in those three games, as well.

Playing for her native Crotia, Marta Galic has put up some impressive stats throughout the tournament with the Croatian national team. She has scored 48 points and grabbed 23 rebounds in seven games, while her sister, Marija, has pulled in six rebounds in six games and scoring 14 points. Marta's tournament high in points, 10, came against Poland and Germany.

Langer and her Danish teammates have been competing in the u20 European Championships Division B. Langer has been a key contributor in five of Denmark's games so far, scoring 49 points, grabbing 18 rebounds, and dishing out eight assists. Her best game of the tournament came in a tightly contested 67-63 loss to Denmark where she put up 11 points, grabbed two rebounds and dished out two assists.

Recent graduate,
Anna Seilund, and Denmark went on to win the FIBA Women's Championship for Small Countries title on July 1. Seilund played a pivotal role in the championship run, playing in all five games while dishing out 19 assists, which tied her for fifth in the tournament.

In August, another newcomer for the Dons, Lucija Kostic, will compete in the u18 Women's European Championships for Croatia. Stay tuned for more updates as she begins her tournament run.
