WBB | Katy Steding Returns to Hilltop as Associate Head Coach

San Francisco – University of San Francisco women's basketball coach Molly Goodenbour is pleased to announce the hiring of Katy Steding to associate head coach.

"Katy will be a huge asset to our program," said Goodenbour. "She brings extensive coaching experience, she's a dedicated teacher and passionate about helping players reach their potential."

Steding is a 16-year coaching veteran that returns to USF from Boston University where she spent four years at the helm with the Terriers. During the 2016-17 season, Steding guided the Terriers to an 11-7 record in the Patriot League, marking their highest win total since they joined the conference in 2013.

Before BU, Steding was on the coaching staff at Cal where she helped lead the Golden Bears to their first ever Pac-12 title and a pair of trips to the NCAA Tournament.

This is Steding's second stint at USF, working with Hall of Famer and her fellow Stanford and Olympic teammate, Jennifer Azzi from 2010-12. During that time, Steding was an associate head coach that oversaw recruiting, opponent scouting, and player and practice development.

Her first head coaching position was at Warner Pacific College (NAIA) in her native Oregon, where she spent seven seasons, helping transition the team from a club-level program to a varsity team. Steding recorded a pair of 20-plus win season, leading the Knights to the NAIA Division II National Tournaments in 2004 and 2006. The 2004 selection to the national tournament marked the first postseason appearance in school history for men's or women's basketball. At the conclusion of the 2005-06 season she earned Cascade Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year in 2005-06 after leading the Knights to their first-ever CCC title.

Steding's enjoyed a well-decorated playing career which includes an NCAA championship, an Olympic gold medal and three Pac-10 All-Conference honors. Steding graduated from Stanford in 1990 after leading the Cardinal to its first-ever NCAA championships alongside current USF head coach, Goodenbour, and former head coach Azzi.

"We are fortunate to have her join us and look forward to getting her on the court working with our team," added Goodenbour.

Steding's professional career saw her play abroad in Japan and Spain before returning to the United States and earning a spot on the 1995 U.S. National Team that was dubbed the "Women's Dream Team." That team compiled a 60-0 record that culminated with a gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
