WSOC | Dons Shutout Hawaii, Stay Unbeaten at Home

SAN FRANCISCO — Another multi-goal performance by the offense and another strong stand by the defense Sunday kept the San Francisco women's soccer team unbeaten at home this season, as the Dons defeated Hawaii, 2-0, at Negoesco Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • San Francisco finally broke through in the 58th minute after the two teams had played to a scoreless stalemate through the entire first half and more than 10 minutes into the second. Miciah Madison dribbled the ball along the right edge of the box, then passed low to Samantha Jehnings, who put it in for her eighth goal of the season and a 1-0 USF lead.

  • Just seven minutes later, the Dons struck again off a corner kick. Ashley Humphrey lobbed a corner into the box, where it was banged around at least three times before Cassidy George found the loose ball and put it in from just two yards in front of the goal. It was her first goal of the season and gave USF a 2-0 advantage.

  • Both teams had chances to score in the first half but could not find the net. Madison sent a cross low in front of the goal in the seventh minute that found a wide-open Izzie Lueken on the other side of the goal. Lueken bodied the ball to settle it, but a clean, sliding tackle by a Hawaii defender broke up the play before Lueken could get a foot on it to score. Madison, herself, sent a hard shot on goal in the 36th minute after flying up the left side, but Hawaii 'keeper Alexis Mata made one of her eight saves on that shot as well.

  • San Francisco had another chance to score late in the second half, but Mata came up with her eighth save of the stanza. Karley Weeks scooted a pass over to Sydney Cooper as both of them were on the attack from the right side. Cooper had no defenders in front of her as she fired a shot from 10 yards out, but Mata stretched out to make the save and keep USF off the board.

  • Molly Eby also made three saves in the first half. All of Hawaii's chances in the first 45 minutes came on counters and breakaways, but the USF defense was quick to get back and Eby made her three stops to keep the clean sheet.
NUMBERS TO KNOW
  • 3rd: Eby logged her third shutout of the season Sunday. Her defense has been a big help in all three of her shutouts, as she has made no more than three saves in all three contests.
  • 5-0: The Dons are a perfect 5-0 at home in 2018. Three of those wins have come in shutouts. They have averaged 2.6 goals per home game.
  • 6: Madison tallied another assist on Sunday to give her six points on the weekend. She totaled five points in Friday night's game versus Sacramento State (1 goal, 3 assists).
  • 8th: Jehnings' second-half goal was her eighth of the season and third of the weekend. She has scored goals in five of 10 games, including three multi-goal performances.
COMING UP
  • The Dons' home stand continues with their last non-conference game at 7 p.m. Friday when they host UC Irvine. USF then kicks off West Coast Conference play on Sept. 30 at home versus Santa Clara.
