The annual cross-bay competition hosted by both San Francisco and Saint Mary's starts Friday and runs to Saturday. Two teams – this year Hofstra and Southern Utah – come to the Bay Area to play both schools while also playing a neutral site match against each other at one of the schools. This season, the neutral site match will occur in War Memorial at the Sobrato Center, with Hofstra facing Southern Utah at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Â
SERIES HISTORY
Â
San Francisco is 2-3 all-time against Hofstra, last meeting the Pride in 2004. The Dons beat Southern Utah, 3-1, in their only meeting three years ago during the 2015 season.
Â
TRIPLE DOUBLE-DOUBLE
Â
Kathya Garcia tallied three consecutive double-doubles at the Fresno State Invitational last week, averaging more than 3.5 kills and 4 digs per set, while also setting new season highs in both categories. On Friday she posted an 11 kills, 14 digs double-double against American. Later that afternoon, she again had 11 kills while also recording a season-high 18 digs.
Â
Saturday she led all players with a season-high 22 kills to go with 17 digs against host Fresno State in a narrowly decided five-set match. Garcia also had three blocks, four assists and a service ace on the weekend.
Â
HOME, SWEET HOME
Â
San Francisco has won four straight home openers dating to 2014. All four of their consecutive home opener victories have been via 3-0 sweeps. The Dons have not lost a home opener since 2013, when they fell in five sets to Long Beach State on Sept. 6, 2013.
Â
COMING UP
Â
The Dons travel to their final non-conference tournament of the season next weekend in Fullerton, Calif. There, they will face Idaho (Sept. 14), host Cal State Fullerton (Sept. 14) and UC Riverside (Sept. 15). West Coast Conference play opens at home versus Bay Area rival Santa Clara on Sept. 20.
