STILLWATER, Okla. — The San Francisco women's soccer team held the No. 21 team in the country scoreless Sunday for 73 minutes, but host Oklahoma State finally broke through with a penalty kick goal in the 74th minute and would go on to score twice more in a 3-0 non-conference win at Patterson Stadium.
The Cowgirls (6-1) took seven shots in the first half but only put two on goal, both saved by USF starting goalkeeper
Olivia Camera. Meanwhile, the Dons (5-3) were efficient in their shot selection during the first 45 minutes, putting all three of their shots on goal but not being able to find the net.
It was Kim Rodriguez who put in the game's first goal at the 73:27 mark of the game after the Dons had committed a foul in the box. Oklahoma State used its new-found 1-0 lead to build momentum, and four minutes later it scored again. On the attack, Grace Yochum rolled a pass into the middle of the box where she found Mario Zoller. Zoller was able to put a straight-on shot into the back of the net from up close, making it 2-0.
Then in the waning minutes, with San Francisco pressing to try and get on the board, the Cowgirls scored one more time. Haley Woodard broke away, dribbled right past her defender and sent a shot from just outside the box inside the upper post to make it 3-0.
Seven different Dons took shots for USF, including
Karley Weeks and
Mia Villegas with two each. San Francisco's offensive aggression got stronger in the second half, earning five corner kicks, but it could not convert one into a goal.
The Dons return home next week to start a four-game home stand that includes the start of WCC play on Sept. 30. Before that, the Dons will host Sacramento State on Friday, Hawaii on Sunday, and UC Irvine on Sept. 21.
