CORVALLIS, Ore. – With darkness putting an end to the day before the second round could be completed, the University of San Francisco men's golf team finished the opening day of the Oregon State Invitational in second. The Dons shot a 1-over 285 with 18 holes official, three players finished the first round in the top-15. Leading USF after 18 holes was sophomore
Matthew Anderson.
"Today was a good for us," said head coach
Jack Kennedy. "We found a nice groove early and were able to ride some momentum the rest of the day. 36 hole days are as much about a mental grind as anything else and I felt our patience was key to our success. We are setup for a great run tomorrow."
Anderson capped off his opening round in second after shooting a 4-under 67. He opened the round with a birdie on the par-5 fifth, his opening hole. On the back-9 he was flawless, carding birdies on 14 and 17. On the front, his only blemish was a bogey on three which he quickly erased with a birdie on four to finish the round with five birdies. It is Anderson's second round under par this season.
Senior
Tim Widing finished his day tied for eighth. Widing shot an even par 71 in the first round, he was two under when play halted in the second. For the day he had four birdies, two coming on the par-4 11
th.
Toby Briggs sits in a tie at 12
th after the first day. Briggs shot an even par 71 in the first round and was up and down in the second round finishing with one hole still to play at even par. For the day he carded six birdies.
Alex Chin and
Christoffer Palsson finished the first day tied at 41
st. Chin shot a 5-over 76 in the first round and was three over with a hole to play in the second round. Palsson shot a 6-over 77 on the first 18. He began the second round 2-over with three holes to play before play was halted.
Tournament host Oregon State was in the team lead after 18 holes. The Beavers shot a 5-under 279 in the first round.
The Dons were on their last hole when the round was halted, they will resume it tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. with the third round immediately following.
