MGOLF | Dons Finish Second at Oregon State Invitational

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The University of San Francisco men's golf team resumed the second round this morning and continued on their stellar play in the third round to finish second at the Oregon State Invitational. The Dons finished with a 1-over 853 (285-281-287) giving them back-to-back second place finishes.

"Today was definitely a grind for everyone out there," said head coach Jack Kennedy. "I'm proud of the way our guys battled the adversity and kept pushing forward. Overall, a second place is a success for our group and we'll go into our last event in the fall with confidence."

USF had two finish in the top-5 and were once again led by Matthew Anderson who captured second place, shooting a 5-under 208 (67-69-72).  Anderson continues to play tremendous golf; the second place finish is his second top-10 finish this fall.  The 208 is a collegiate best in a 54-hole tournament.

Anderson finished the second round with a 2-under 69. After 36 holes, Anderson already carded a season-best 10 birdies, matching his output at the Carpet Capital intercollegiate.  In the third round he opened with a birdie on the fifth – his third-straight birdie on that hole.  After a double on eight and a bogey on 10 he rebounded with a birdie on 15 to finish 1-over for the day. The two birdies gave him 12 for the tournament which was tied for third most.

"My ball striking was definitely a strength for me this week," said Anderson. "I gave myself a lot of chances and was able to take advantage of those. Even though the course seemed scoreable at times, I strategized well this week and that's something I take pride in."

Finishing right behind Anderson was senior Tim Widing who finished the tournament carding back-to-back 2-under 69s in the second and third round.  For the tournament, Widing shot a 4-under 209 (71-69-69), his first tournament under par this season and first top-5 finish of the year. Widing played incredibly consistent golf both days, finishing with 43 pars which led the tournament.  On Tuesday, he climbed four spots on the leaderboard thanks to three birdies.

Toby Briggs also had a strong tournament.  Playing in his second event of the season he finished tied for 13th with a 2-over 215 (71-71-73).  After back-to-back rounds at par, he finished with a 2-over 73 on the final round. Briggs carded birdies on 14 and 15 to give him eight for the tournament.

Sophomore Christoffer Palsson finished tied for 34th.  He climbed four spots on the leaderboard on the final day.  After shooting a six over 77 in the opening round her backed it up with a 1-over 72 and a 2-over 73 to finish the tournament with a 9-over 222 (77-72-73). Alex Chin came in fifth for the Dons and was tied for 50th overall with a 13-over 226 (76-74-76).

Tournament host Oregon State took home the team title with an 18-under 834 (279-275-280).  The Beavers' Carson Barry was the individual medalist, shooting an 11-under 202 (66-69-67).
