WSOC | Lions Defeat Dons on a Second Half Penalty Kick

SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco women's soccer team could not get it going offensively on Wednesday evening, as they fell 1-0 to visiting Loyola Marymount.  The Dons (8-4-1/1-1-0 WCC) outshot the Lions (3-7-2/2-0-0 WCC) 10-8 but it did not matter as a penalty kick 56th minute proved to be the difference.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Dons opened the game on the attack, Keely Roy took a pair of shots in the first half, the first that was saved by LMU's keeper Sadie Keeny which led to one of USF's two first half corner kicks. Ultimately, the Dons came up empty in the half as both offenses managed just nine shots total.

• Late in the first half, just before the intermission, the Dons were called for a handball inside the penalty box that led to the first of two penalty kicks for the Lions.  Keeper Olivia Camera (8-4-1) came up with a huge save and sent the two sides into the locker room knotted up at 0-0.

• Out of the break, the Dons offense was stuck in neutral.  USF managed just six shots, with three on goal. The Lions backline defense smothered Samantha Jehnings and Miciah Madison which didn't allow the Dons potent forwards to get any good looks.

• LMU did little to pressure the Dons, taking just three shots in the second half, but in the 56th minute USF was called for their second handball in the penalty box.  This time, LMU's Amber McCorkle sent the ball past Camera to score the game's only goal.
