SAN FRANCISCO – With 32 seconds left in regulation freshman
Josh Kunen's layup put the University of San Francisco men's basketball team over the century mark for the first time since February 2, 2016. In first year, head coach
Todd Golden's debut USF simply overmatched visiting Sonoma State, winning 101-50 on Tuesday night at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
USF (1-0) had five players in double figures and nine players with seven or more points as the Dons shared the ball beautifully on Tuesday evening. The Dons shot 46.6 percent from the field going 34-for-73, from 3-point range the Dons shot 31.8 percent, going 14-for-44 from beyond the arc.
Charles Minlend and
Khalil Shabazz led the team with 15 points apiece. Minlend opened the contest with 11 points in 11 minutes of action in the opening half. He finished the night playing 18 only minutes as USF unloaded the bench.
Shabazz was electric in his USF debut, he was 5-for-11 from the field and 5-for-10 from beyond the arc, he also had seven rebounds and three assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Dons won the tip and scored their first bucket when
Jimbo Lull hit a pair of free-throws at 18:28 mark. From there USF never looked back, going on an 8-0 run sparked by a pair of
Jamaree Bouyea dunks.
• The Seawolves crept back into the game, eventually tying it up at eight on a jump shot outside the paint by Sonoma State's Isaac Davidson, two of his team-high 11. From there the Dons went 14-2 run culminating with a layup by Minlend. The Dons went into the locker room leading 49-23.
• Out of the break it was all USF. The depth of the Dons bench was too much for the Seawolves as USF ran up the score, outscoring the Seawolves 52-27 in the second half.
