SAN FRANCISCO — For the second time this season the University of San Francisco women's volleyball team pushed a top-15-ranked BYU team late in the match, not relenting until the final point, but the No. 11 Cougars earned the season sweep Saturday with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-23) West Coast Conference sweep at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Like a month ago in Provo, the Dons (6-18, 2-11 WCC) were down 2-0 in the match but put up a strong fight in the third set. BYU (22-3, 13-1 WCC) started the frame with a 4-1 advantage and looked to cruise to a quick sweep, but the Dons battled back with a 5-1 run of their own to take an 8-7 lead thanks to kills from three different players.
Â
- For the next 22 points, neither team led by more than one. That stretch alone saw six lead changes and 11 tie scores, battling back and forth and USF hanging right with the Cougars. It was the Dons who pulled away late to take a three-point lead at 21-18 and inch closer to stealing a set from the No. 11 team in the country. BYU responded with back-to-back points, but USF answered with the same on consecutive kills by Victoria Rogers, making it 23-20.
Â
- Déjà vu set in at that moment. Holding a 23-19 lead during the third set in Provo, Utah, on Oct. 10, the Cougars ran off six consecutive points to win the set, 25-23, and clinch the sweep. Saturday, trailing 23-20 in the third set, the Cougars ran off five straight points to win the set, 25-23, and clinch the sweep.
Â
- BYU never trailed in its big second set victory, running out to a 23-10 lead before USF went on a 4-1 run towards the end. After USF scored two of the first three points in the opening set, BYU again did not trail, winning the first, 25-17.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
- .184: Â The Dons' defense got better as the night went on, holding BYU to progressively lower attack percentages in each set. BYU hit just .184 in the third after hitting .385 in the opening set.
- 3: San Francisco had three players with double-digit digs in the match. Kathya Garcia notched a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs, Camille Araujo had 10, and Anna Dalla Vecchia led all players with 12 digs.
