SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco baseball team came through with a rally just in time Saturday, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh to come from behind and beat visiting CSU Bakersfield, 3-2, and grab a 2-0 lead in their non-conference series at Benedetti Diamond.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- San Francisco (3-2) capitalized on CSU Bakersfield (2-5) mistakes Saturday. The Dons took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning after Roadrunner left fielder Cole Valletta misplayed a ball to allow Nick Yovetich to get into scoring position. Small ball took care of the rest, as back-to-back ground balls first moved Yovetich to third, then scored him for the 1-0 USF advantage.
- It was another CSUB mistake in the seventh that gave the Dons the lead for good. Trailing by a run, San Francisco loaded the bases with no outs thanks to two walks and a single. Another single – this one a pinch-hit RBI knock from RJ Cordeiro – tied the game at 2-2. But when the Roadrunners tried to keep the game tied by throwing home on a ground ball to first base, the ball got away, allowing Robert Emery to score the go-ahead run and make it 3-2.
- CSU Bakersfield had taken its first lead in the series with its first runs of the weekend in the sixth. The Roadrunners got a leadoff walk, then tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI double down the left field line from Ryan Koch. Then with two outs, a clutch RBI single by Valletta seemingly erased his earlier mistake by giving the Roadrunners a 2-1 lead.
- It was another clash of good starting pitching between the two teams Saturday. USF starter Scott Parker got into the sixth inning, allowing just one run and striking out four against only one walk while scattering three hits in 5 1/3 innings of work. Ethan Skuija threw six innings, giving up two runs (one earned) with eight strikeouts and only three hits. And for the third time in as many wins, the USF bullpen picked up a save – this time going to Alex Pham with two innings of shutout, two-hit work and four strikeouts.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
