SAN FRANCISCO — A surprise home date on Tuesday came with a surprise comeback by the University of San Francisco baseball team, as the Dons exploded for 10 runs in the bottom of the eighth to erase what had been a 5-0 deficit and beat visiting San Jose State, 12-6, in a non-conference game at Benedetti Diamond.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Tuesday's game was originally supposed to be played at Municipal Stadium in San Jose, where the Spartans play their home games. But with inclement weather in the forecast, it was announced Monday evening that the game was being moved to San Francisco's Benedetti Diamond – where the Dons (6-5) have yet to lose this season.
Â
- San Francisco still trailed 5-2 entering the bottom of the eighth, but would leave the inning with a seven-run advantage 15 batters later. Riley Helland started the whole rally by getting hit by a pitch. Jack Winkler – who entered Tuesday with a 10-game hitting streak, struck out next and looked to be out of chances to extend his streak, not knowing he would bat again in the same inning.
Â
- USF's eighth-inning scoring started when Jacob Muñoz drew a four-pitch, bases-loaded walk that made it 5-3. San Jose State (7-5) had a chance to keep it that way, but the Spartans' first baseman threw too high on a play at the plate, allowing another run to score and the rally to continue with only one out.
Â
- Still trailing 5-4 and with two outs, it was Nick Yovetich's clutch two-out, two-strike, two-run single through the left side of the infield that scored two runs and gave USF the lead for good at 6-5. The Dons weren't done there, though, as Helland would drive in two runs with a single through the left side, Winkler would bring home a run – and extend his hitting streak to 11 games – with an RBI double, and Jonathan Allen put a cap on the rally with a monster three-run home run over the elevated wall in right-center field, making it 12-5.
Â
- San Jose State staked itself to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and looked to be in control for much of the game. The Spartans took advantage of four leadoff free passes (three walks, hit-by-pitch), then got three RBI singles to go ahead 4-0. They tacked on one more run with a sacrifice fly, but the Dons got out of the inning with a double play, as Allen threw out SJSU left fielder Blake Berry trying to advance from second to third.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
- 0: USF did not commit an error on Tuesday, the third time in the last four games it has been errorless. After committing six errors in their first five games, the Dons have had only two in their last six.
- 4: Josh Mollerus came in after SJSU's five-run first and threw four scoreless frames for USF. He scattered three hits and struck out one, lowering his season ERA to 2.00.
- 12: The Dons tied a season high with 12 runs in Tuesday's game. They also scored 12 on Feb. 24 versus CSU Bakersfield – also at Benedetti Diamond.
