DAVIS, Calif. — 33 runs, 38 hits and 24 runners left on base across nine full innings of action told the tale of a wild afternoon of baseball Monday at Dobbins Stadium, as the University of San Francisco baseball team jumped out to a huge early lead, only to hang on in the late innings for a 19-14 non-conference road win over UC Davis.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- San Francisco's offense came out swinging from the get-go, scoring all 19 of its runs in five consecutive multi-run innings to start the game. The Dons (24-16) scored four runs in the first with three RBI hits, four more in the second on three consecutive RBI hits, five more in the third inning thanks in part to a Riley Helland two-run home run, three more in the fourth on three RBI doubles, and three in the fifth with another double, a sacrifice fly and a passed ball. The Dons held leads of 8-0, 13-2 and 19-5 through five innings.
Â
- But UC Davis (11-22) was not going to go that quietly. The Aggies hit four home runs Monday, only one of them a solo shot. UCD got a two-run home run from Garret Kelly in the second inning to make it 8-2. Alejandro Lara hit two home runs after the sixth. He hit a two-run shot in the seventh that made it 19-7, and he hit a solo shot the very next inning to make it 19-10. Lara finished with four RBIs, while his teammate Spencer Gedestad collected a game-high five RBIs, including his three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth that was the Aggies' final blow, making it 19-14.
Â
- Both teams combined to use 10 pitchers. Grant Young (2-2) threw his second-longest outing of the year with five innings of work, striking out three and only walking one while allowing five runs on seven hits. He earned his first victory since his longest outing of the season when he threw 5 1/3 on Feb. 24 versus CSU Bakersfield.
Â
- Nick Johnson was the only pitcher for UC Davis that did not allow any runs. All four other Aggies arms surrendered multiple runs, including Nathan Lemos, who gave up seven on seven hits in 1 1/3 innings.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
- 5: Jack Winkler's five-hit day (5 for 7) was San Francisco's first five-hit performance by a Don in two years almost to the day. Dominic Miroglio also had five knocks at Santa Clara on April 23, 2017.

- 23: The Dons' 23 hits in the game were their most since collecting 24 hits on May 7, 2017, versus Pepperdine.
