BASE | Allen Stretches HR Streak to 3 Games as Gonzaga Sweeps

SPOKANE, Wash. — Jonathan Allen's offensive prowess continued Sunday, as did Gonzaga's, as it had all weekend, as Allen homered for the third straight game and the Bulldogs posted 12 more runs on 15 more hits to complete its first sweep over the University of San Francisco baseball team since 2016 in a 12-3 West Coast Conference win at Patterson Baseball Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gonzaga (23-17, 15-6 WCC) repeated its first inning performance from Saturday, jumping on USF starter Alex Pham (3-2) for three runs in the first inning and a quick 3-0 lead. Pham was a bit unlucky in the inning, as all four of the base hits he surrendered were all ground balls, including one that rolled right in front of home plate and one that got just past a drawn in Riley Helland at first base. Austin Pinorini got the scoring going with an RBI single through the right side, and Nick Nyquist put a crooked number on the scoreboard with a two-run single that shot past Helland.

  • Like Saturday, the Dons cut into the lead following Gonzaga's first-inning flurry. A one-out RBI double from Jacob Munoz put the Dons on the board and made it only a two-run game at 3-1 in the top of the second. But two more strikeouts ended the rally. Allen's third home run of the weekend came a little too late, a two-run shot in the eighth inning with the Dons already traiing 8-1.

  • Pham settled down and did not allow a run for the next three innings, retiring nine of the next 11 batters he faced. Trying to roll Pham's momentum on the mound over to the offense, San Francisco threatened to get even closer in the fifth when Chase Hodkinson led off with a single. He moved all the way to third base and the Dons rolled the order back to the top, but was stranded there. Gonzaga would make the Dons pay in the bottom half of the inning for not taking advantage.

  • The Bulldogs pulled away with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. A two-run triple from Pinorini, an error on the Dons and two RBI singles from Nyquist and Mason Marenco made it 8-1. Marenco delivered the final blow in the bottom of the eighth with a grand slam that made it 12-3, Gonzaga's seventh home run of the series.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 31: Allen's home run accounted for the Dons' 31st long ball of the year, topping last season's total of 30. San Francisco still has 12 games scheduled this season. The team most recently hit 33 in 2017.
  • 41: Gonzaga scored 41 total runs in the teams' three-game series. It hit seven home runs and totaled 51 hits over the three games. San Francisco scored 14 runs on 23 hits in the three games with three home runs (all from Allen).
COMING UP
  • San Francisco hosts Sacramento State in a single non-conference game on Tuesday for the start of a five-game home stand. The Dons then host Pepperdine for a three-game West Coast Conference series starting at 3 p.m. Friday.
