BASE | Aggies Fend Off Dons to Win in Walk-Off

DAVIS, Calif. — After seeing 31 total runs on 38 hits in a four-hour affair back on April 22, Tuesday's affair between the University of San Francisco baseball team and UC Davis at Dobbins Stadium was a little different.

Never more than a one-run game all afternoon, a rare pitchers' duel evolved on the mound during the midweek contest, as it took extra innings for the host Aggies to walk off with a 3-2 non-conference victory and clinch the season series over the Dons.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • USF freshman righty Josh Mollerus pitched into the sixth inning for the third time in as many starts, matching his season-long outing of 5 2/3. He allowed just one hit and walked none while striking out four and allowing two runs (one earned). On the other side, UC Davis (19-26) threw six different pitchers, four of whom that threw multiple shutout innings while leading the Aggies to the win.

  • UCD had a runner in scoring position for the second consecutive inning when Tanner Murray came to the plate in the bottom of the 10th. In fact, he had led off the bottom of the ninth with a single, trying to start a game-winning rally then, but he was stranded 90 feet away as the Aggies left two runners in scoring position against Julian Washburn to force extra innings.

  • This time, Murray had the chance to bring in the winning run instead of scoring it, and he cashed in. After another leadoff single by Conner Longrie, a sacrifice bunt moving him to second, and a strikeout, Murray's name was called with two outs. And instead of stranding the winning run for the second consecutive inning, he singled to left field to score Longrie and seal the walk-off win.

  • San Francisco (28-25) tied the game twice after trailing by one run each time, first in the fifth and then again in the seventh. Jack Winkler drove in both of the Dons' runs with a fielder's choice groundball and a sacrifice fly, going 0 for 4 on the day with two RBIs. USF's starting 1 through 4 hitters went a combined 1 for 16 with five strikeouts.

  • UCD took the lead in the bottom of the first thanks to an error on the Dons. Murray led off the first with a single and stole second base. A groundball out was going to move him to third, but instead the ball was thrown away, allowing him to score from second and make it 1-0. Now tied 1-1, the Aggies got a runner all the way to third without a hit in the sixth, and then brought him home with a two-out RBI single by Cooper Morrison to go back up 2-1.

  • The Dons loaded the bases in the fifth with just one out, but could only get a sacrifice fly from Winkler to tie the game. San Francisco left eight runners on base Tuesday, including five in scoring position. USF went 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position and 2 for 12 with runners on base.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 9: With an eighth-inning double, Robert Emery extended his hitting streak to a season-high tying nine games. He's now batting .419 with five doubles, a home run, seven runs scored and five RBIs during his streak.
  • 12: Tuesday's season series-clinching victory for UC Davis marked the first time the Aggies beat the Dons in a season series in 12 years (since 2007). That year, the Aggies won both non-conference games the teams played. Since then, they've either split the season series or it was won by USF.
COMING UP
  • San Francisco hosts Big West Conference member CSUN in a non-conference three-game series starting Friday to conclude the regular season. Sunday, the Dons will honor nine seniors who will play their final games as Dons at Benedetti Diamond.
