TRK | Klein Clinches Trip to NCAA National Championship

DAY THREE RESULTS | COMPLETE FINAL RESULTS

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
The University of San Francisco track team will have another representative next month at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in Austin, Texas, after Dana Klein advanced Saturday in the women's 1,500 meters at the NCAA West Preliminary meet at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium.

Klein ran a personal-best 4 minutes, 15.27 seconds, to finish 11th overall and grab the last of two "next fastest time" qualifying spots. There were two heats of 12 runners each Saturday, with the top-five finishers in both heats grabbing auto qualifying spots to the national championship and only two spots left for the next fastest times.

"Dana's effort was simply spectacular tonight," said San Francisco head coach Pat McCurry. "She was in a brutally tough heat, but she brought a suitcase full of resilience to the occasion.  Just kept racing and grabbed her qualifying spot in the final few meters."

Klein was part of what would be the fastest heat of the night in the women's 1,500. Six of the top seven times came from the first heat. Klein finished seventh in her heat, beating out three runners from the Pac-12 and also posting a faster time than two fellow West Coast Conference runners from BYU in the second heat.

Klein doubled on Saturday, also running in the women's 5,000 after her performance in the 1,500. She finished 30th overall with a time of 16:22.51.

On the men's side, Jack Rowe and Chris Olley both ran in the 5,000 meters. Rowe (10th, 13:58.23) and Olley (12th, 14:01.58) both finished among the top-12 overall, but they were left out of the qualifying spots on account of being part of the fastest heat of the night. The top-13 fastest times all came from the second heat, with only five automatic qualifying spots and two "next fastest times" spots up for grabs. The five automatic qualifying spots from the first heat were all behind Rowe and Olley.

The 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships will be held at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas, from June 5-8.
