BASE | Dons Win Battle of the Southpaws, Take Series Against Waves

SAN FRANCISCO – USF received three tremendous pitching performances and got some timely hitting as they defeated visiting Pepperdine 4-2 on Saturday to take the series.

The Dons (27-20/14-9 WCC) tallied four runs on five hits, none bigger than a two-run blast by Jonathan Allen in the bottom of the fourth.  Pepperdine (19-20/10-10 WCC) was held to two runs on 10 hits and left 11 on base.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  •  The Waves struck first scoring a run in the top of the second, they added a second run in the top of the fifth.  Dons' starter Scott Parker tossed 6.1 innings, scattering seven hits, two runs, one earned with a walk and six strike outs.  He outdueled the Wave's lefty Easton Lucas (4-4) who surrendered four earned runs in 6.2 innings.
  • Lucas kept the Dons' bats quiet through the first time through the order, striking out four of the first six batters he faced.  The second time through the order the Dons got it going, the big hit a two-run blast by Allen over the right field fence.
  • The homerun by Allen was his 16th of the year which ties him for sixth most in a single season with Bradly Zimmer (2012) and Adam Clear (2013). It's the most home runs hit by a Dons since Benedetti Diamond was redesigned in 2016.
  • USF took the lead scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh, both coming with two outs.  The big hit was an RBI double down the right field line by Jacob Munoz that scored Robert Emery from second.  The Dons' insurance run was scored when Wave's reliever Michael Mahoney walked in a run on four pitches. Riki Urata was credited with the RBI.
  • The Dons' bullpen was spectacular.  Julian Washburn (8-0) got the win pitching 2.1 innings for the Dons scattering three hits.  Joey Steel came in with runners at the corner in the top of the ninth and after a two out walk, he got the final out to earn his 11th save of the season.
  • The 11th save by Steele is tied for a single-season record with Houston Hibbered who tallied 11 saves in 2014.

NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 17: Tyler Villaroman stole his 17th base of the season in the bottom of the 4th inning, he is now 17-for-18 on the year.
  • 5: Munoz double in the seventh was his fifth of the season, the RBI was 14th of the year.
  • 23: Number of career home runs by Allen – he hit seven as a junior his first year with the Dons in 2018.  The 23 home runs has cracked the top-10 all-time at USF.
