MGOLF | Anderson Misses Cut But Players Well at Canadian Open

HAMILTON, Ontario – University of San Francisco men's golfer Matthew Anderson did not make the final cut at the RBC Canadian Open at the Hamilton Golf & Country, but the Dons freshman still had a tremendous showing.  Anderson, competing as an amateur finished with an 8-over 147 after 36 holes in his first ever appearance at a PGA Tour event.

The native of Mississauga, Ontario earned the right to compete at the RBC Canadian Open by winning a regional qualifier last month.

He opened the tournament with back-to-back pars.  On the teebox on the first tee he told Dons' head coach Jack Kennedy over the phone that he was so nervous he couldn't feel his hands. He overcame those nerves to launching the drive 294 yards down the right side of the fairway allowing him to attack the green on the second shot.

After a bogey on the third he got even with a birdie on six, the first of four birdies on the day for Anderson.  On the 216 yard par 3 fifth, Anderson knocked it 11 yards to the rough and chipped in for the birdy.

On the back-9, Anderson went double bogey on 10 and bogey on 11 before responding with three-straight birdies on holes 12, 13, and 14.  He finished the first day with a bogey on 16 and a double on 18 to finish the day with a 4-over 74.

With the cut set a 2-under, Anderson had work today on the second day. He opened the round with five straight pars before recording a bogey on six.  He went into the turn 1-over and 5-over for the tournament.

On the back-9 a bogey on 11 all but ended his chances to make the cut.  He also recorded bogeys on 14 and 16, but finished strong with pars on 17 and 18 to finish the day with a 4-over 74.
