NAMPA, Idaho — Track is back.
The University of San Francisco track team kicked off its 2020 indoor season Saturday with a flurry of collegiate debuts, school records and top finishes at the Ed Jacoby Invitational hosted by Boise State at the Jacksons Indoor Track.
Nine of the 14 student-athletes who competed for USF in the season-opening meet were freshmen making their debuts. That included rookies
Rayne Anwar and
Evelyn How, who both broke the program record in the 60-meter dash twice each on the day.
Anwar ran 7.88 seconds in the prelims to finish fifth, and How ran 7.90 to finish seventh in the prelims, both qualifying for the finals. And then in the finals, How ran 7.87 for a sixth-place finish, and Anwar posted the new school record of 7.81 for a third-place overall finish and a new school record.
"Rayne and Evelyn were spectacular in the 60 meters, and Abby (Pradere) was so impressive against a loaded field in the 1,000."
Pradere made her indoor debut in the 1,000 following the first-ever cross country season in her entire athletics career last fall, and she nearly nabbed a victory. The freshman was outleaned in a photo finish by host Boise State's Kristie Schoffield by only .03 seconds, finishing runner-up in a time of 2:53.07. Schoffield finished sixth at last season's NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 800.
Anna Tait (5th, 2:58.18), and
Baneet Bains (7th, 3:00.10) also grabbed top-10 finishes to give the Dons three.
Kalii Caldwell made her collegiate debut in the mile run, earning a top-25 finish with a time of 5:21.35.
"Very pleased with the poise of our very young group today," said USF Director of Track and Cross Country
Pat McCurry. "They kept themselves appropriately focused and brought great energy."
The Dons compete next weekend at the UW Invitational at the University of Washington's Dempsey Indoor Facility in Seattle.
