MBB | Bears Stun Dons at Buzzer

BERKELEY, Calif. – The University of San Francisco went into Haas Pavilion and led for thirty nine minutes and twenty seconds out of a possible forty minutes. However, host California snatched the lead as the final second ticked away thanks to a 3-point, buzzer-beating field goal by Makale Foreman. The walk-off bucket gave the Golden Bears a 72-70 win on Sunday afternoon.

"This was a disappointing outcome," said head coach Todd Golden. "I thought we played well enough to win, but not well enough to guarantee victory.  We have to turn the page quickly and get ready for USC on Wednesday."

USF (5-3) got a tremendous performance from its backcourt duo of Jamaree Bouyea and Khalil Shabazz, who combined to score 45 points. Bouyea notched a career-high with 24 points and was electric – scoring 11 of the Dons first 21 points. He finished 10-for-17 from the floor and was 3-for-7 from beyond the arc.

Shabazz supplied much of the remaining offense by notching 21 points, going 6-fot-12 from the field and 4-for-5 from distance. Julian Rishwain had a big second half to finish with 11 points, his third game in double figures.

The Dons shot well from the field and from beyond the arc. From the floor the Dons shot 46.9 percent, 23-for-49.  From long range USF shot 43.5 percent 10-for-23.  It was the sixth-straight game making 10 or more 3-point field goals.

California (3-4) did something no other team has been able to do against the Dons all season by making more than five 3-point field goals, and the final shot from Foreman was the dagger. Cal overcame an eight point halftime deficit by shooting 58.3 percent from the field in the second half, going 14-for-24 overall and 4-for-7 from 3-point range in the second period.

The Bears also owned the Dons on the inside. Foul trouble by Taavi Jurkatamm limited the Dons ability defensively and Cal took advantage, scoring 26 of their 72 points inside the key.

Andre Kelley led the Bears with 22, Grant Anticevich had 18, and Matt Bradley added 17. The Dons outrebounded the Bears 31-30 but it was turnovers that helped Cal stem the tide.  USF committed 11 turnovers that Cal turned into 12 points, 10 of them coming in the second half.

USF took control from the very beginning.  Shabazz and Bouyea helped the Dons jump out to a 5-0 lead and the Dons led by as much as 12, up 21-9 at the 13:10 mark.  USF went into the locker room with all the momentum when Bouyea hit a three at the buzzer from well beyond halfcourt.

The Bears chipped away the entire second half and came out firing right out of the gates in the second half. Cal eventually cut the deficit to two following a four-point play by Bradley. With less than seven seconds remaining, Shabazz was fouled and went to the line to shoot a 1-and-1, but missed the front end.  Ryan Betley grabbed the board and found Foreman, who hit the game winner in front of the Bears' bench.

The Dons will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Southern California to take on USC.  Wednesday's game will be televised on Pac-12 Network with Roxy Bernstein and Bill Walton on the call.  Pat Olson will have the call on radio on the official home of USF Dons basketball, KNBR 1050-AM.
