SAN FRANCISCO – Trailing by three with less than 20 seconds in regulation
Marta Galic calmly pulled up from outside the arc in front of the Dons bench and evened up the score at 75. From there, the University of San Francisco women's basketball team had more gas in the tank than Fresno State as the Dons held on to win 102-93 on Sunday evening at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
"I was really happy for our team that they were able to pull out a win against a really good Fresno State team tonight," said head coach
Molly Goodenbour. "Just another resilient effort by our girls. We went through some stretches at the end of regulation and the first overtime where the game's momentum swung in their favor but we didn't let the game get away from us."
USF (2-2) had four players finish in double figures.
Lucie Hoskova led all scorers with a game-high 24. She was 7-for-16 from the field and 8-for-10 from the free throw line. Joining her in double figures was
Ioanna Krimili who had 22, she also added four rebounds and four assists.
Marta Galic had a career-night scoring 20 points with 10 rebounds for her first career double-double. Sixteen of her 20 points came after halftime.
Amalie Langer finished with 15 points, she also had four steals and three assists.
"Marta hit a huge three pointer at the end of regulation," said Goodenbour. "That shot brought her a lot of confidence and it carried over in the final couple of periods. She played a great game, her scoring and defending at the perimeter was really big for us tonight."
Fresno State (3-3) had five players in double figures and was led by Haley Cavinder and Yanina Todorova's 20 points. Also in double figures was Aly Gamez (19), and Hanna Cavinder and Wytalla Motta who had 10 each.
USF shot well once again, connecting on 46.5 percent of their attempts from the field (33-71). From distance they were 10-for-23. USF had another big night at the free throw line hitting 26 of 32 attempts. In the second half and overtime USF was a combined 17-for-22.
Fresno State shot 38.3 percent from the field going 31-for-81. In both overtimes, the Bulldogs were just 4-for-18.
"As a team we found ways to respond to all of Fresno State's runs, their twins are really hard to guard, they are a really good team that likes to push the tempo and we did a really good job of hanging with them through all the momentum shifts," said Goodenbour.
USF led by as much as 10 points late in the first quarter. The Dons had the early momentum at the end of the first and into the second quarter. USF went into the locker room leading by eight, up 40-32 after doubling up the Bulldogs 22-11 in the second quarter.
The Bulldogs chipped away at the Dons lead in the third and took it back in the fourth. A layup in the paint by Gamez capped off a 14-2 run by Fresno State, giving the Bulldogs a 72-70 lead. The two teams traded free throws over the final minute. With a chance to make it a two possession game, Gamez missed the first of two free throws.
The Dons trailing by three, 75-72, called a quick timeout. Out of the break Galic ended up with the ball on the near arc and drilled it. USF got the stop it needed and forced overtime where USF eventually put the game away at the charity stripe.
The last time the Dons scored 100 points came in a triple overtime win at Colorado State on November 13, 2007.
USF will return to action on Friday, Dec. 18 when they host William Jessup. That game will be streamed on the WCC Network with
George Devine calling the action live from War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
