Dons Come Up Short In Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Competing in their first of three straight matches on the road, the University of San Francisco volleyball team (0-14, 0-6) could not find the momentum they needed against Santa Clara (5-11, 1-5) on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Broncos, 3-0, at the Leavey Center.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Although Santa Clara (SCU) would record the first five points of the match, the Dons remained close by trimming their deficit to three points, 18-15, midway through the first set following a kill from Shyia Richardson. Shortly thereafter, USF notched three consecutive points to come within just two, but the Broncos would buckle down and hold on to secure the first set, 25-19.
  • Despite SCU jumping out to an early lead in the second set, USF responded by closing the gap to just one point, 15-14, after another kill from Richardson and a bad set from the Broncos. Using the strength of their home crowd to their advantage, Santa Clara outscored the Dons 6-2 down the stretch to grab the second set, 25-18, and go on top 2-0 in the match.
  • Battling until the final whistle, USF stayed within striking distance in the third set, 13-7, following a kill from Hannah Kinnison, but ultimately could not find the rhythm they needed to complete the comeback. Taking the third set 25-9, the Broncos secured their first conference victory of the fall by defeating the Dons, 3-0.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Continuing her dominance, Richardson tallied a game-high ten kills on Saturday while also recording four blocks, one ace and one assist.
  • For Kinnison, the Sligo, Colo. native recorded six kills against the Broncos, marking her second highest total in a match this season (season-high 12 at Sacramento State). Impressively, her eight digs were also her second most in a match this year (season-high 10 at UC Davis).
  • Notably, Sophie Sydenham logged five kills for the second straight match on Saturday as she also tied Kinnison for the team-lead with eight digs on the afternoon.
UP NEXT:
Looking ahead, USF will continue their road swing with a stop at Gonzaga next Thursday, Oct. 14 followed by a showdown at Portland on Saturday, Oct. 16. Live streaming and live statistics links will be available via the team's schedule page.
