SAN FRANCISCO – Gonzaga sophomore forward Drew Timme scored 15 of the Bulldogs' first 17 points and was a major factor all afternoon as the nations' top ranked team routed the Dons 100-61 on Saturday afternoon at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
USF (10-10, 4-6 WCC) finished with three in double figures led by the tandem of
Jamaree Bouyea and
Khalil Shabazz who had 14 each.
Julian Rishwain had a solid afternoon, finishing with 10 off the bench.
Bouyea, quietly had a very strong evening. After missing most of the second half of the Pepperdine game he responded by going 6-for-10 from the field, he also had three assists. With his 14 points, he now has 1,030 for his career – surpassing USF Hall of Famers Mike Quick and Erwin Mueller for 36
th all-time.
As a team, the Dons struggled to get into a groove offensively. USF opened the contest 0-for-12 from beyond the arc and finished the day 7-for-33. The 21.2 3-point field goal percentage is the second lowest of the season, just behind the 5-for-26 display against UMass-Lowell. The Dons finished the game 21-for-60 from the field.
No. 1 Gonzaga (20-0, 11-0 WCC) had five players in double figures and was led by Timme who had a game-high 28 points. Timme finished 11-for-12 from the field and also had 10 rebounds for a double-double. Aaron Cook, Joel Ayayi, and Corey Kispert added 12. Jalen Suggs had 11.
The Bulldogs finished the game 10-for-21 from 3-point range, Timme alone was 2-for-2. From the field Gonzaga shot 61.0 percent going 36-for-59. On the glass the Bulldogs outrebounded USF 35-27.
The contest opened with Timme setting the tone early. Scoring three buckets in the paint on the first three possessions of the game with Dons draped all over him. The Bulldogs built a 20-4 lead before freshman
Anthony Roy scored the Dons' first field goal with 11:38 to play in the opening half.
Roy was a bright spot for the Dons. The Oakland, Calif., native finished with eight points, an assist, and a steal in 19 minutes of action. The eight points matches his career-high scored against Long Beach State.
With under three minutes to play in the first half, Shabazz hit a pull up triple and began a stretch of eight consecutive points. The Dons went into the locker trailing 48-26.
Out of the break, the Bulldogs went on a 7-2 run to build their lead to 30. Gonzaga outscored the Dons 52-35 in the second half and built their lead to as high as 41 points.
The 39-point defeat is the largest home loss at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center. The 100 points by Gonzaga is the most scored by an opponent at War Memorial Gym since Loyola Marymount scored 103 on Feb. 20, 2016.
The Dons will return to action on Thursday, February 18 when they host Loyola Marymount. That game is slated for a 6:00 p.m. tip and will be televised on NBC Sports Bay Area.
