WSOC | Dons Fall to BYU on the Road

PROVO, Utah – The University of San Francisco women's soccer team had a chance at an equalizer with less than five seconds remaining, but the shot off the foot of Kalena Teufel sailed high over the crossbar, allowing host BYU to hold on for a 3-2 win.
 
USF (1-1-1, 0-1-0 WCC) took it to BYU (2-2-0, 1-0-0 WCC) in the second half. Overall, BYU outshot the 26-18, but USF had an 11-9 shots on goal advantage. After the intermission, the Dons owned a 12-9 shot advantage and a 12-3 advantage on corner kicks.
 
However, every time USF found the back of the net, the Cougars would respond. In both of USF's second half goals, BYU scored in the ensuing five minutes or less. BYU eventually netted the game winning goal in the 73rd minute on a goal by Mikayla Colohan off the pass from Cameron Tucker.
 
"Tough game end to end but in my nine years this is the best we have played on the road at BYU," said head coach Jim Millinder. "We made three mistakes and got punished for them, by a very good BYU team. But the positives: that was the best performance we had this year even though we lost. The kids worked hard and battled, there was a lot of great individual performances. Outstanding effort, tremendous effort by everyone who played."  
 
BYU struck first in the 17th minute on a goal by Makaylie Moore. The Cougars kept the Dons off the board in the first half and put more pressure on the Dons with USF keeper Molly Eby notching four saves in the first period.
 
In the second half, USF struck first on a gorgeous set piece by the Dons.  A turnover deep in their own territory led to a quick pass from Teufel to Cassidy George who found Ashley Humphrey for goal.  The goal was Humphrey's first of the year, and 12th of her career.
 
BYU quickly retook the lead in the 61st minute on a goal by Bella Folino on the assist by Colohan.  USF evened it up 2-2 when the Cougars were issued a red card in the 71st minute.  Sydney Cooper scored the Dons second goal in the ensuing penalty kick.
 
Eby (1-1-1) briefly left the contest for the final eight minutes in the first half but came back to finish they day with six saves.  BYU's keeper (Cassidy Smith (2-2-0) finished the day with seven saves and two goals allowed.
 
Humphrey led the Dons with five shots, four on goal. Cassidy George had three shots with two on goal.  Isabelle Esparza had a shot on target as did Teufel and Bethan Parry.
 
The Dons will return Saturday, March 6 when they travel o Malibu, Calif., to take on Pepperdine.  The Dons and Waves are slated for a noon start.
