SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco women's volleyball team evened up the season series with Gonzaga, defeating the Bulldogs in four sets (22-25, 25-23, 25-22, 30-28) on Saturday afternoon at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
USF (7-9, 7-9 WCC) was still plagued by attack errors, but was able to take advantage of the Bulldogs sloppy play. USF hit .162 with 58 kills on 185 swings with 28 errors. Gonzaga (5-11, 5-11 WCC) hit .194 on the day with 57 kills on 180 swings with 22 errors. The Bulldogs also had 23 other errors.
"I think for us, we really needed a bounce back from yesterday's performance," said head coach
Frank Lavrisha. "Not the fact that we lost, but that we didn't play to our abilities. For whatever reason we weren't ready to go yesterday. But today, they wanted it and you could tell. The fourth set featured 18 tie scores and 10 lead changes. They had to come back from set points from Gonzaga. Kudos to our team, in the truest sense of the word it was a team win."
The Dons finished the day with two in double digits in kills led by
McKenna Marshall's match-high 20 kills. She also added 20 digs for her seventh double-double of the year.
Greta Corti recorded her eighth double-double of the year with 18 kills and 21 digs.
Aylen Ayub was terrific, she finished with 45 assists, two aces, seven digs, five block assists and six kills.
Anna Dalla Vecchia tallied 25 digs, she now has 1,222 digs for her brilliant career which ranks sixth all-time in USF history.
Bruna Correa finished with 10 digs.
Gonzaga finished the match with four players in double figures in kills. Sarah Penner led the Bulldogs with 12 kills, while hitting .231. Alyssa Hughes had 11 and Kennedy Croft and Katelyn Oppio had 10 each.
The Dons will return to action next Thursday when they travel to Santa Clara to take on the Broncos in the final road game of the season. Thursdays' game against SCU is slated for a 6:00 p.m. first serve. The match will be streamed on the WCC Network.
