MGOLF | Lind’s Ace Highlights Rough Opening Round
5/28/2021 7:13:00 PM | Men's Golf
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Intense heat and fast greens helped spoil the 19th ranked University of San Francisco men's golf teams return to the NCAA Championships. The Dons finished the opening round with a 21-over 301 and sit in 30th place after 18 holes.
"Tough day or us today," said head coach Jack Kennedy. "We did not expect to get off on this kind of start. We just couldn't really get any momentum going as we battled the course all 18 holes. But we are fine mentally. The guys are confident that there's a big round in us tomorrow and we've seen this in past National Championships, there are always a lot of big swings and we are ready to get back into this thing tomorrow."
The fortunate thing for the Dons, who are making their first NCAA Championship appearance in 66 years, there is a lot of golf left. Moreover, low scores were not common in the opening round. Only three teams finished under par, leader Texas Tech at 4-under and second place Sam Houston State at 2-under, Pepperdine sits in third at 1-under.
USF did have some big shots. Fourth year Soren Lind notched his first collegiate hole in one on the par 3 fifth hole. Classmate Toby Briggs carded an eagle on the par-4 14th when he holed out on his second shot.
The hole in one by Lind was the first by a USF player since teammates Briggs and Matthew Anderson carded aces in separate par threes in the same round at the Orange Country Collegiate Classic on February 11, 2020.
"I was there with Toby on the front nine and saw him hole out for eagle on 14," said Kennedy when asked about the Dons' highlights. "That got him back under par and tried to get a little momentum going. I was there, but seeing Soren make a hole in one is obviously really special, especially in a national championship setting. So hopefully we build off those shots and find something for tomorrow."
Lind was the Dons leader after 18, he finished with an even par 70 and sits in a tie at 28th.
Briggs, Christoffer Palsson, and Tim Widing sit in a tie at 129th after shooting 7-over 77s. Widing struggled early but built some momentum late. After a bogey on three, he finished his day with two-straight pars, surrounded by a birdie on six, followed by three more pars. Matthew Anderson sits in 141st after shooting an 8-over 78.
USF will return to action tomorrow morning when the Dons tee off at 11:30 a.m. from the first tee. They will once again be paired with SMC and Florida. Live results can be found on the Dons' schedule page or by visiting Golfstat.com
