DAVIS, Calif. – Competing in their second meet in as many weeks to open the season, the University of San Francisco men's and women's cross country teams both displayed signs of progress on Saturday at the Stump Invitational, most notably with
Ruby Smee placing first in the women's 6k for the Dons.
FINAL RESULTS:
- Returning to competition with vengeance, Smee topped her impressive performance last weekend (2nd/21:16.0) at the USF Invitational with a first-place finish in Davis. This time around, the Australian trimmed her time to 19:47.5 in the 6k.
- Following close behind in the top-20, Baneet Bains placed twelfth in the final results with a time of 20:35.3. Delivering a strong performance in her 2021 debut, Maddy Hamilton finished twenty-eighth with a time of 21:23.0. For the women, Whitney Hessler (21.56.1) also placed fiftieth, Julia Morales placed fifty-forth (22:11.0), Emily Jackson placed seventy-eighth (23:37.6).
- On the men's side, Ed Kiolbasa finished in the top-five for the second consecutive meet after placing fifth on Saturday with a time of 23:25.9. Joining his teammate in the top-ten, Daniel Maneloveg finished strong for the Dons by placing ninth (23:47.2). Additionally, Kip Yegon also placed forty-second (24:55.4), Hiruy Alemseged placed sixty-ninth (26:25.0), Dan Skovron placed seventieth (27:04.9), Carter Lewis placed seventy-first (27:23.5) and Joe Skovron placed seventy-fifth (27:39.3).
- For the Dons, the women finished sixth in the final standings with 119 total points while the men placed fifth with 134 total points. Overall, UC Davis (23), UC San Diego (94), UC Santa Barbara (113), San Diego State (115) and Cal Poly completed the final top five for the women while Cal Poly (30), UC Santa Barbara (47), UC Davis (90), UC San Diego (109) and USF (134) rounded out the top five for the men.

"I am really happy with the women's team today, especially with Julia, Maddie and Emily's season debut. Of course having Ruby get the W in a great field was awesome. For the men, Ed and Dan raced with poise and are really setting themselves up well heading into the bigger races to come."
UP NEXT:
USF will take the next week off to recover and train before returning to action on Sept. 22-23 at the Dillinger Invitational in Springfield, Ore. Hosted by Oregon, this tournament will be one of two final regular season meets for the Dons as USF is scheduled to compete in the Bronco Invitational (hosted by Santa Clara) on Oct. 16.
