Dons Come Up Short Against Bulldogs to Begin WCC Play

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Returning to the Hilltop for the first time since mid September, the USF Dons women's soccer team (5-3-3, 0-1) were unable to build much momentum throughout their match with the Gonzaga Bulldogs (6-2-2, 1-0) as they fell short by a 4-0 score at Negoesco Stadium on Saturday night.

Both team's defenses came to play early as neither side was giving away opportunities for easy looks throughout the first half. The Bulldogs were able to pull away from the Dons in the second half of play as they scored three times in the final 45 minutes to secure the win to open up WCC action.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • The early portions of the match was a defensive struggle with neither team able to get much going until the 39 minute mark when the Bulldogs found the back of the net to take the 1-0 lead early.
  • At halftime the Dons out shot Gonzaga by a 7-5 margin despite trailing by a goal through the first 45 minutes.
  • The Bulldogs didn't relent throughout the second half of action as they were able to find the back of the net three times after halftime as they secured the 4-0 victory on the road.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Marissa Vasquez led the way for the Dons on the offensive attack as she recorded four total shots, with two of them coming on goal against Gonzaga.
  • Alex Carpio was able to record three shot attempts against the Bulldogs as the star freshman has been a great addition to the USF attack this season.
  • In goal, Megan Nail was able to record three saves as she faced 13 shots in Saturday night's match.
UP NEXT:
The Dons will now hit the road as they continue WCC action as they will head to Provo to take on the BYU Cougars (4-2-4) at 6:00 p.m. PT from South Field. The Cougars won last season's matchup on the Hilltop by a 3-1 final score.
