Defense Guides USF to Season Sweep of Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Pushing their winning streak to five straight games over the Broncos, the University of San Francisco men's basketball team (21-6, 8-4) took care of Santa Clara (17-9, 7-4) on Saturday afternoon, 74-58, to sweep the season series over SCU and move into sole possession of third place in the West Coast Conference standings.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Trading baskets to begin the ballgame, the Dons and Broncos were tied at seven through the first four minutes of play before USF used the strength of a 9-0 run in the moments to follow to grab the early advantage, 16-7.
  • Exchanging blows as the first half played on, USF and Santa Clara remained close as SCU trimmed their deficit to one, 25-24, with 5:19 remaining in the half. Shortly thereafter, the Dons caught fire heading into the locker room as San Francisco outscored the Broncos 15-4 in the final five minutes of the half to hold a twelve-point lead, 40-28, at the break.
  • Continuing their momentum into the second half, USF pushed the gap to fourteen 50-36, on a layup from Zane Meeks at 13:13. Fighting back on their home floor, Santa Clara responded with a 6-0 run to come within eight, but that is as close as the Broncos would get for the remainder of the contest.
  • Silencing the crowd following the spurt from SCU, Gabe Stefanini nailed back-to-back three-pointers to keep the Dons in control by double digits, 56-42, with 9:02 left on the game clock.
  • Experiencing little resistance from Santa Clara down the home stretch, USF converted seven-of-eight from the free throw line in the final 3:02 to put the Broncos away and ultimately seal a sixteen-point road victory. With the 74-58 win, USF swept Santa Clara in the season series for the second time in three years as Todd Golden moves to a perfect 5-0 against SCU with the victory while the Dons move into third place in the conference standings behind No. 1 Gonzaga and No. 22 Saint Mary's. Overall, Santa Clara's 58 points on Saturday marked the lowest point total of conference play for the Broncos and their second lowest output of the season (lost 59-52 against Fresno State on Nov. 24).
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Logging another monster performance on both ends, Yauhen Massalski dazzled with his eighth consecutive double-double and twelfth overall this season as the 6'9" forward finished with a team-high 19 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocks on 7-of-9 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the stripe while also tallying one steal and one assist in 31 minutes played.
  • Recording his third double-double as a Don, Khalil Shabazz impressed with 11 points and 10 rebounds in 34 minutes on the court as the Seattle native also added five assists and three steals in an all-around effort.
  • Finishing in double figures, Jamaree Bouyea was active as well as the fifth-year guard notched 12 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks while playing all 40 minutes for the sixth time this year. Notably, Stefanini also poured in 11 points on 2-of-4 from behind-the-arc and 5-of-5 from the free throw line in 28 minutes of action.
  • As a team, USF led Santa Clara in second chance points (14-0), fast break points (12-9) and bench points (18-12) while limiting Santa Clara to 36.2 percent from the field and 21.4 percent from distance.
