Stevenson Shines, Vujovich Goes Deep as Dons Defeat Utah Valley

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Returning home following their first road game of the season, the USF Dons baseball team (3-2) were in fine form Friday afternoon as they took game one of a four game set against the Utah Valley Wolverines (1-4) 7-1 at Benedetti Diamond.

USF received a tremendous start from Owen Stevenson who went six innings and gave up just one run while allowing only three hits, one walk and striking out one Wolverine batter. The Dons' offense was led by designated hitter Jordan Vujovich who launched his second home run of the season to go along with a double in a 2-for-4 day at the plate with two RBI as well.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Both teams Friday starters were on their games early as both teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the third when the Dons scratched across two runs for the first tallies of the game.
  • USF added another run in the fourth as Luke Keaschall successfully stole home on a double steal and Gabe Giosso drove in Brandon Greim with an opposite field double off the wall in right field.
  • Utah Valley scored their lone run of the afternoon on a solo home run in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 4-1.
  • Vujovich quickly got that run back and added another with a deep home run to right center field to extend the Dons' lead to 6-1.
  • San Francisco scored their seventh and final run of the afternoon in the bottom of the eighth courtesy of Nick Yovetich's RBI double to score Greim for the second time on Friday.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Stevenson has been in command to begin his year as he's now thrown 11 innings and allowed just a single run for a sparkling 0.82 earned run average and 0.64 WHIP.
  • Vujovich has continued to drive the ball with authority this season and display great strike zone discipline with his 2-for-4 day at the plate and now leads the Dons' with two home runs through the first five games of the year.
  • Giosso hasn't taken much time to adjust to hitting full-time at Benedetti Diamond as he collected two more hits Friday afternoon in the victory as he now leads the team with a .455 batting average.
  • Yovetich provided some thump at the bottom of the USF batting order with his late RBI double as he reached base three times against the Wolverines with two hits and a walk.
  • Lance Santerre and Kai Burdick each combined to throw the final three innings with Santerre throwing two shutout innings allowing just one base hit and striking out one UVU batter. Burdick slammed the door in the bottom of the ninth in style as he struck out the side in order for the Dons' third win this season.
UP NEXT:
USF now looks forward to a Saturday doubleheadder with the Utah Valley Wolverines at Benedetti Diamond.
