DONS AT A GLANCE:
- Celebrating senior night in their final regular season game at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center, the Dons fell to the nation's top team on Thursday night, 89-73, as No. 1/1 Gonzaga topped USF to push their winning streak to seventeen straight games while improving to 5-0 in true road games and 13-0 in West Coast Conference play. Suiting up for the last time on the Hilltop, Jamaree Bouyea finished with 14 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds and 1 steal while playing all 40 minutes for the seventh time this season. Despite leaving with an injury in the second half, Shabazz tallied a team-high 17 points along with 3 rebounds and 2 assists in 30 minutes of action.
- Ranking among the conference's best, Bouyea currently sits third in the WCC in scoring with an average of 17.1 points per game while Yauhen Massalski is second in field goal percentage (60.4) and rebounds per game (9.5) and third in blocks per game (2.3). Notably, Shabazz also ranks second in the conference in steals per game (1.8).
- As a team, USF is third in the country in total rebounds (1,146) tenth in total three-point field goal attempts (821), eleventh in total three-point field goals made (291), seventeenth in total blocks (143) and eighteenth in three-point field goals per game (9.7). Overall, the Dons also rank in the top 40 in the nation in scoring margin (29, 10.4), blocked shots per game (4.8), total steals (36, 230) and rebound margin (37, 5.5).
- Heading into Saturday afternoon's matchup, the Dons currently rank No. 20 in Bart Torvik, No. 25 in KenPom and No. 29 in the NCAA's Net Rankings. Notably, USF is one of three WCCÂ teams in the top 30 of each ranking system as the WCC is currently projected to get three bids in the 2022 NCAA Tournament.
- With a win over San Diego, USF would record their most wins in a single season since the program was reinstated in 1985-86 (previously had 22 in 2017-18 and 2019-20).
- Moving into their final tune up of the regular season, the Dons boast the resume of an NCAA Tournament team as USF is 8-6 in Quad 1 + 2 games, including wins over Davidson (Net 46/KenPom 51), UAB (KenPom 49/Net 51), Fresno State (KenPom 59, Net 66), Towson (Net 70, KenPom 72) and a season sweep of Santa Clara (Net 72, KenPom 74).Â
SCOUTING THE TOREROS:
- In their last time on the hardwood, San Diego fell to No. 23 Saint Mary's, 60-46, at home on Thursday, Feb. 24.
- Despite their .500 record on the season, the Toreros have been a tough matchup for most teams throughout the year as USD has tallied seven conference wins in 2021-22 and an 8-5 overall record at Jenny Craig Pavilion this season.
- Individually, San Diego is led by forward Marcellus Earlington, who averages 13.3 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game across his 28 games played. Notably, Terrell Brown-Soares, who currently sits second in the WCC with 2.7 blocks per game and third in total blocks (61), is a strong presence on the defensive end while teammate Jase Townsend rounds out the offense with an average of 10.9 points per game.
- The Toreros lineup features 10 new faces in 2021-22, including transfers Bryce Monroe (Sam Houston State), Jase Townsend (Denver), Marcellus Earlington (St. John's), TJ Berger (Georgetown), and Terrell Brown-Soreas (Pittsburgh).Â
