Dons Secure Season Sweep of Toreros in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Closing out their regular season schedule with one final road trip, the University of San Francisco men's basketball team secured their third season sweep of conference play with a 78-62 win over San Diego (14-15, 7-9 WCC) at Jenny Craig Pavilion on Saturday afternoon.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Unable to find much momentum out of the gates, the Dons did not record their first basket of the contest until a layup from Jamaree Bouyea at 17:23, which knotted the game at two early on.
  • In the minutes to follow, USF regrouped on offense as the Dons responded with a 17-6 run to jump in front of the Toreros, 19-8, as the midway point of the first half approached.
  • Defending their home court, USD battled back to trim their deficit to five, 25-20, at 8:09, but the Dons answered back once more as they stretched their advantage back to double digits on a three-pointer from Julian Rishwain with 4:58 on the clock.
  • Trading baskets as the half wound down, USF would ultimately hold a ten-point lead, 38-28, heading into the locker room following another triple from Rishwain just before the halftime buzzer.
  • Pushing the gap to thirteen in the opening moments of the second half, Khalil Shabazz nailed a three of his own at 17:53 to make the score 43-30 in favor of the Dons.
  • With the Toreros fighting on each possession, San Diego stayed within striking distance as the action played on, but two free throws from Patrick Tapé kept USF in front, 61-51, with just under nine minutes left in regulation.
  • Down the stretch, USD continued to show their grit, but they would not come within six points of the Dons as USF applied pressure when it mattered most. Putting the nail in the coffin, back-to-back baskets from Tapé and Bouyea pushed the San Francisco lead to 74-62 at the 1:18 mark. Wrapping up their seventh road win of the season with little resistance in the final minute, USF hung on to secure their third season sweep of a WCC team this season with a 78-62 victory over San Diego.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Logging a new season-high with 15 points, Tapé was named Player of the Game after finishing 6-of-7 from the field, 2-of-2 from the free throw line and 1-1 from beyond-the-arc. Overall, the Charlotte, N.C. native also added five rebounds, three assists and one steal in 25 minutes played.
  • Heating up at the right time, Shabazz finished in double figures for the sixth consecutive game as he tallied 15 points, 5 assists and 2 steals on 6-of-12 from the floor and 3-of-7 from distance.
  • Flirting with a triple-double, Bouyea logged 14 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks while playing all 40 minutes for the second straight game and eighth time this season. Notably, Rishwain also recorded a team-high 18 points on 6-of-10 from two and 4-of-6 from three while also adding 4 rebounds and 2 assists.
  • As a team, USF led San Diego in fast break points (16-1) and bench points (22-18) while also forcing twelve Torero turnovers. Additionally, the Dons dished out sixteen assists while limiting USD to just four assists total while also sinking thirteen free throws to San Diego's seven.
