Dons Hit Three Home Runs in Loss to ASU

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Getting off to a fast start and flexing their offensive muscles early, the USF Dons baseball team (10-8) battled hard before ultimately falling short to the Arizona State Sun Devils 17-10 in the series finale at Phoenix Municipal Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Jordan Vujovich, Mario DeMera and Gabe Giosso each went yard against the Sun Devil pitching staff as the Dons' offense scored double digit runs for the fourth time this season.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • The Dons' offense was clicking early as Vujovich drove a three-run blast over the wall in right to score DeMera and Giosso to get the Dons started early with a 3-0 lead.
  • ASU added a run in the bottom of the first before DeMera deposited his second home run over the wall to score Zach Freeman and Kyle Knell and give the Dons a 6-1 lead through two innings.
  • USF's home run barrage wasn't done yet as Giosso drove a ball over the left center field fence to give the Dons the 7-2 lead in the fifth inning.
  • ASU exploded in the middle innings as they scored four times in the sixth and five times in the seventh to take an 11-7 lead through seven innings.
  • The Dons fought back to score three times in the eighth as Brandon Greim brought home Knell and Tyler Martinez on a Sun Devil and he came around to score on a Luke Keaschall RBI double to make it a 11-10 Arizona State lead.
  • Tacking on six more runs in the eighth inning to pad their lead, the Sun Devils went on to win 17-10 in front of their home fans.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Vujovich continued his tremendous power and discipline with a 3-for-5 day at the dish including his three run blast in the top of the first.
  • DeMera had another strong day at the plate going 3-for-5 with his three run homer and now leads the Dons with 15 RBI so far this season.
  • Giosso contributed two hits as well with his home run to extend the Dons' lead in the middle innings as he's been a tremendous addition to the lineup this season.
  • Knell had another good showing at the plate as he went 2-for-3 with a walk and a pair of runs scored on Sunday.
  • Left-hander Oscar Lepe was the bright spot on the mound for USF throwing three scoreless, hitless innings with a pair of strikeouts out of USF's bullpen.
UP NEXT:
The Dons now return home for a four game week at Benedetti Diamond starting with a Tuesday afternoon matchup with the Sacramento State Hornets (9-7). First pitch for Tuesday's game will be at 2:00 p.m. with live streaming and live statistics available via the team's schedule page
