Dons Drop Close Game to Air Force in First Round of WNIT

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Playing in the WNIT for the second consecutive year, the USF Dons women's basketball team (17-16) battled hard and to the final buzzer as they dropped a close 64-60 game against the Air Force Falcons (19-13) at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.

USF enjoyed a tremendous performance from Jasmine Gayles as she scored 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting to go along with six rebounds as she played the entire 40 minutes on Thursday. Ioanna Krimili contributed 15 points as well as she shot 3-of-5 from three-point range to go along with three rebounds and two assists as well.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Both defenses were on their games early as neither team could find much of an offensive rhythm early in the game as the Falcons led 13-12 after the first ten minutes.
  • USF caught fire in the second quarter and gained some slight separation from Air Force as they took a 30-27 lead into halftime.
  • Each side scored 18 points in the third quarter as the intensity of the game turned up in the second half and the dons lead 48-45 heading into the final quarter.
  • Air Force came out aggressive in the final quarter as they were able to build a lead and held on for the 64-60 victory against the Dons to advance to the next round of the WNIT.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Gayles recorded her eighth 20+ point performance of the season on Thursday as she was highly efficient as well playing the entire game.
  • Krimili ended her strong season by pouring in 15 points against the Falcons as she moves another step closer to the program's scoring records.
  • Off the bench, freshman Claudia Langarita scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds on Thursday to close out her first season on the Hilltop.
CATCHING UP WITH COACH GOODENBOUR:
"I'm proud of how our team performed over the course of the season. We fought through injuries and COVID to place third in the WCC and earned a WNIT bid. Tonight we didn't play as well as we wanted to and Air Force competed really hard and deserved this win. It does not take away from this really successful season that we had and I hope we can continue to build from here."
