SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Playing in their second WCC contest of the season, it wasn't the USF Dons baseball team's (11-10, 0-2) day as they dropped the second game of the three game set 8-3 against the Santa Clara Broncos (11-6, 2-0) on a rainy Saturday afternoon in the City by the Bay.
The Broncos scored early and often throughout the game on Saturday as the Dons weren't able to muster a big inning to cut into the deficit. Infielder
Luke Keaschall reached base twice with a pair of hits and
Brandon Greim drove a two-run double down the right field line late in the ballgame to draw the Dons a little closer.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Santa Clara got off to a quick start on Saturday as they scored three runs in the top of the first, the Dons answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning as Mario DeMera hit an opposite field double to plate Keaschall.
- The Broncos added single runs in the second, third, fourth, sixth and seventh innings as they built an 8-1 advantage throughout the middle innings.
- Down to their final few outs, USF built a late rally and scratched across a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning as Greim drove his two-run double down the right field line that plated Nick Yovetich and Jordan Vujovich.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Keaschall continued his raking ways with a 2-for-4 day in the batter's box with a run scored hitting in the leadoff spot in the batting order.
- Relievers Adam Shew and Jonah Jenkins had two solid outings as both threw the combined final seven innings as they each allowed an earned run and struck out a combined 11 Bronco hitters.
- Greim had a big extra base hit late in the ballgame as he went 1-for-4 with two RBI to give USF some late life.
- DeMera got the Dons' offense started early with opposite field double off the wall in right field that drove in Keaschall.
