SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Head coach
Chris Gerlufsen and the University of San Francisco men's basketball program are proud to announce the commitment of Texas A&M transfer Marcus Williams.
"I couldn't be happier with the addition of another proven talent like Marcus Williams to our roster," said Gerlufsen. "Marcus has been around highly respected coaches and has experienced a high level of success, being named the Mountain West Freshman of the Year while at Wyoming and starting 25 out of 27 games this past year at Texas A&M. His natural ability to create, make others better, and score the ball will mix nicely with our group. Marcus is young, so it's exciting to think about where his game can still go. We can't wait to get to work with him!"
This past season, Williams made 27 appearances for the Aggies on the hardwood, which included starting in 25 games. Overall, the versatile guard averaged 7.9 points, 3.4 assists, 2.2 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 24.4 minutes played. Notably, the highlight of his 2021-22 came in a road game at Georgia on Jan. 4, when Williams buried the game-winning triple with less than one second left on the shot clock to knock off the Bulldogs.
Prior to transferring to Texas A&M, Williams was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Year in 2020-21 after an impressive debut season at Wyoming. Making a splash immediately, Williams was a finalist for the Kyle Macy National Freshman of the Year by College Insider as he appeared in all 25 games for the Cowboys, which included 24 starts. In his freshman season, Williams averaged 14.8 points per game to go along with 4.3 assists as his 14.8 points ranked eighth among freshmen in the nation while his 4.3 assists ranked fourth in the Mountain West. Displaying his dominance on offense, Williams scored in double figures in 21 games and had five contests in which he scored 20-or-more points.
Out of high school, Williams was rated as a three-star recruit by Rivals.com and was one of the top-rated guards in Texas. Ranked No. 14 in the state by Texas Hoops and in the top ten for his region of the greater Houston area, Williams averaged 21.4 points, 7.3 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 3.3 steals per game as a senior to earn First Team All-VYPE, a magazine dedicated to Houston high school sports. On the court, Williams helped lead Dickinson High School to a No. 14 ranking nationally according to MaxPreps.com as his team ranked second in the state of Texas. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, DHS ended their abbreviated season at 32-5 as they earned a trip to the 6A state final four in Texas' largest classification. Additionally, Williams played AAU for Team Harden – Texas in the Adidas Gauntlet for head coach Eric Dixon.
