MORAGA, Calif. – Playing in their final true road game of the regular season, the University of San Francisco baseball team (24-27, 11-13 WCC) fell in another close contest at Saint Mary's on Sunday afternoon as the Gaels (25-23, 9-15 WCC) topped the Dons, 4-3, at Louis Guisto Field.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Taking an early 1-0 lead in all three games, Saint Mary's struck first in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI groundout from utility player Chris Santiago.
- After adding another run to extend their advantage to 2-0 in the home half of the third, USF responded with three runs in the top of the fourth to jump on top, 3-2. In the inning, the Dons came up with three consecutive RBI hits as Mario DeMera, Nick Yovetich and Michael Campagna all drove home runs to put USF in control.
- Shortly thereafter, SMC fought back with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead, 4-3.
- Keeping the green and gold within one run in the late innings, Lance Santerre and Adam Shew came on to toss a combined 3.2 innings of scoreless relief, but it was Santiago who would ultimately close out the Dons. Retiring the side in order in the top of the ninth, Santiago sealed the series sweep and the Gaels' third straight one-run victory by notching his second save of the season on Sunday.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Leading the way at the plate, DeMera logged his seventeenth multi-hit game of the season after finishing 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored against SMC. Notably, he is second on the team in multi-hit games behind Luke Keaschall (20).
- Despite not getting a hit, Sunday marked the seventh time this season in which Keaschall has drawn at least two walks as the versatile sophomore has now reached base in nineteen consecutive games.
- Out of the bullpen, Shew has lowered his ERA to 2.95 on the season after the completion of the series as the freshman is impressing in his first year on the Hilltop. For Santerre, the left-hander recorded his eleventh appearance this season without allowing a run as he went 2.2 innings while punching out three batters and allowing only one hit.
UP NEXT:
USF will return home to Benedetti Diamond this Tuesday, May 10 as the Dons will square off against the Stanford Cardinal for the second time this season. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm as live streaming and live statistics are available via the
